How bad before you call off your trip?

After reading all these posts about California, it reminded me that my trailname and family legacy came about as a result of winter weather in California. Maybe I should be more cautious about my winter outings. That, or maybe just not take winter outings in California.

Silly me and I was thinking about camping within about 20min of said pass... In winter no less (once I get my winter gear together.)

Call me crazy,,and the wife too,,we both love big storms and being out in them,,nature at its best. And being in whiteouts are awesome as well. Yep,,,just plain crazy is all. But you got to love mother nature.

This past August I took a canoe trip for a couple nights down the James River and each night it stormed like crazy. I stayed dry, and the rain on the tarp was like rain on a tin roof. Ultra soothing. I feel like with the right gear, I would attempt to brave any condition at least once.

Not due to rain but my brother and I cancelled our second night out a few weeks ago when it was going to be in the low 20s for the second night. Main reason we left for the homestead was really due to terrible deer movement. If we had of seen deer that first day we would have stayed overnight and hunted the second.

We spend so much time trying to escape the rain it is a true pleasure and gift to be in it. Can be a challenge but those are the trips we talk about after.

I would vote to go. You have at the worst a 50% chance of nice weather at the worst. You have decent equipment and good judgement, what is a little rain, if it does come? I grew up in Western Oregon, we did everything in the rain. Just be prepared, as long as you are not expecting any ice storms or threatening weather, you should be fine. I love the sound of the rain, when I am warm and dry and have the proper equipment with me.

Yeah, that sounds familiar.

For me, hurricane-force winds where I'm intending to be, 105*+ F heat with 100% humidity, or temperatures below what my gear is rated for (right now, below 15* F) are the show-stoppers.

Otherwise? "Y'see, this one time, when I was hiking through..." makes for a good story to trade over a beer...
