    Tarp Edging???

    Hey Gurus,

I'm about to order some materials for a couple of DIY tarps I'm planning and while looking have seen a number of tarps with grosgrain Edging . Now I'm wondering if I should do the same?

Presumably it will make the edges more durable, but it will add extra weight, I would like peoples opinion as to whether it is worth it.

Also, Sil stretches when wet??? (I have no experience with sil but I'm pretty sure I've read that) So... does the grosgrain effect that and will I have floppy material that wont go any tighter because the grosgrain doesn't stretch?

Any other pros/cons to having a grosgrain edging vs a rolled hem or any other ingenious trick/technique people have used?

Thanks in Advance for your help and answers.

    Cheers
    Craig

i wouldn't do it, because of the extra weight and because if the gosgrain gets wet it would retain the water i think. i have no real experience here just thinking this. you will get differing opinions here, it's something you'll have to figure out for yourself.

I think the Maccat tarps are all edged with grosgrain or something like that?

I've made tarps using both methods.

I personally prefer to just roll hem it because it's easier, cheaper and just as effective.

Gros grain made of nylon stretches with the fabric and doesn't absorb water. It's purely asethetic though for the loads your tarp will see when compared to a rolled hem. (Freak windstorm aside your tie outs fail before your hems)

    Personal preference.

I don't add it to my DIY tarps because I don't believe it's functionally necessary and since I backpack, I cut all the grams I can.

I own an OES MacCat tarp where the edge is trimmed with grosgrain and it certainly does look nice and it's strong.

Rolled hem for all of my tarps and it works great. I have struggled with my internal designer, man the trim looks sharp, but it just adds weight and I don't see an added benefit for functionality reasons.

I think this boils down to HYOH.

Personally, I think a rolled hem would be better just because it saves you material.
