Singer 750 / Necchi BU

I'm kicking around a couple of possible sewing machines I have access to.

My aunt had a Singer Model 750. I can have it now but I don't recall ever hearing a good word from anyone about this thing. I know she paid a lot of money for it in about 1970, and it had all the bells and whistles you could get. Still does. But when my mother got it, she never liked it. (She doesn't really recall why, she just had trouble with it. ) She said a tech told her the presser foot was worn out or something like that. My wife had one similar that was her mother's and had a lot of trouble with the tensions.

I also may have access to a 40's Necchi. I think it's a BU like this:

I'm going to try to get the Necchi, but was wondering about the Singer. Should I bother with it?

It's pretty much identical to this one with the cabinet and knee controller.

Thanks! Yes, I'm pretty excited about the Necchi. My mom got it in '49 when she got married. It's not quite as pretty as that one. I seem to recall carving my name in the cabinet...

It's the Singer I'm not sure about.

Who knows about the Singer 750? RR? Demo? Anybody?

1970's were a bad time for Singer. I can not imagine a ppresser foot wearing out. But I have seen the feed dogs fail. I don't know about this model but some of that era had rubber coated feed dogs. The idea was to privide a gentle, non damaging surface for very fine fabrics and that kind of thing. I don't think I would buy anything like that again. It was my mother's machine and she loved it I guess. But I found it horrible. Plus this was a time of really garbage plastic gears. They were horrible.

If it was me.... I'd go for the Necchi. They were very well thought of and good machines.

Thanks. I'm definitely getting the Necchi. I didn't want more than one machine but I'm excited to try it. My mom sewed a million miles on it and recently had it serviced. I'm getting it this weekend.

The Singer, well after the limited experience I had with them in the 70's, (all 70's models,) I'm very inclined to leave it alone but I'll play around with it and see. I'm sure you're right about it being the dogs that are problematic.

Any other news on the 750 would be appreciated. I know she spent well over a grand on it in 1970 so it must have been at least a well appointed setup. Then again she also drove a 76 Dart Swinger....

That is a beautiful BU! I love my BF Mira however that one looks like its in better shape then mine!

Beautiful! The one I'm getting is not quite as perfect as the one in the picture, but nearly.

I'll post pictures next week when I get it.

Still interested in any opinions on the Singer 750...

Ya' think!!!

I've got a 648 from the same era. A few years ago I had to replace a hard to get to plastic gear but so what (I thought)...it's been a "fine" machine. I only used it a few times after that up until a month back when I wanted to take advantage of the zig-zag stitch. It promptly shed all of the rubber teeth off of the feed dogs. What a waste. Maybe I'll keep it in case I ever want to do free hand quilting...............................nope, got a 201-2 for that.

Confirming everything I've heard since the early 70's.

I think I'm going to leave the 750 where it is.
