Tree Straps?

Hi I am doing a half thru on the AT next summer from Springer to HF. I just got a Warbonnet BlackBird double 1.1 for cheap off of craigslist. I still need to get a tarp and was thinking about the WB MambaJamba but it is kinda of expensive. Are there any cheaper options out there that would work well with the BB? Also are tree straps necessary? and if so what kind should I get.

I have an old eno hammock that I use for school to relax but wanted a nicer hammock to take on my half thru.

You definitely should use tree straps in the AT.

1" polyester webbing is the general consensus on material and can be purchased from most vendors on here (see manufacturers sub forum) ready to go. Alternatively you could buy the webbing and sew your own?

In terms of tarps, warbonnet tarps are pretty reasonably priced for what they are. If you want cheaper you will sacrifice weight savings I.e. pu coated nylon instead of sil or you could catch a bargain in the for sale section.

Yes they are very necessary anywhere where you might have to tie your hammock to a tree, there are a few states that won't let you tie anything to the trees like Colorado (more information here https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ark+legal+hang). Please just use tree straps, they can be had for $25 or less and it will keep other states from following Colorado and other such states that ban tying anything from trees.

Tree straps are necessary because it doesn't harm the trees like cords do.

Tree straps are a lot nicer to trees and can severely reduce abrasions to the bark that can get infected. I say go for additional dispersed surface area, a strap with 2 inches. Trees Best Friend from Deep South Mountaineering are pretty fly.

Does anyone know how many times you should wrap the webbing to protect the tree? Just trying to figure out what length slings to make.

Much of the impetus behind using tree straps is giving the impression to those that might take issue that we, as hangers, are no danger to the trees health. In the end, it's better to use straps since it's an easy thing to do that puts the minds of those that care (and make decisions) at ease.

That being said, I don't think that wrapping the strap multiple times around the tree 'protects' the tree any more or less. I think you're safe making your straps long enough to fit around the trees that you are likely to hang from. Here in Jersey 5-6 feet is plenty of strap to get around most trees we'd want to hang from.

After using it every day for a couple of months, you'll be glad you bought a nice tarp and you won't think it was expensive at all.
