Great report! Glad to hear that the hiccups you encountered were just that... hiccups. Keep us posted on how you get your meals dialed in. Thanks for the pics and the gear list!

Good report, and nice pics. For me, tylenol PM is another gold-value item. Takes the edge off of that frustrating restlessness. I don't always use it, but I like to have it if I can't sleep.

Good idea Bullfrog; I'm like you; don't like to use that sort of thing but it sure would have added a little peace!

I was traveling on a business trip late yesterday and had a chance to discreetly watch some youtube video's on freezer bag cooking and to check out some links I found here on the forum to different sites that deal with food. I'm encouraged to work on it and not abandon FBC just yet....I love the idea but have to figure out how to consistently love the results!

    Enjoy the day people!

Enjoyed your trip briefing. Solos are the best))))
I'm with you on freezer bag cooking.....I like eating out of a pot. It is just civilized.
Try some Packit Gourmet meals. I find them deeeee-licious. http://www.packitgourmet.com/Single-...inner-c80.html
Try the TX State Fair Chili or Big Easy Gumbo. Good enough that I would eat them at home. And you can fix in the hefty bag or pot.
    Carry forth....

The solo trips really push you in so many ways. Gear, utilizing of time, surviving techniques, and just in deep thoughts. Thanks for giving us an inside look of your trip.

I tried using some of the Knorr sides; several with different noodles. They all tasted thick, slimy and too hard, even after 20 minutes in a cozy. So it was really poor recepies on my part.

I've read a lot more about "assembled" meals for FBC and I've also found an old dehydrater my wife had bought me 20 years ago. Last night I experiemented with dehydrating cooked angle hair pasta, ground beef and some spaghetti sauce left over from dinner. The unit works quite well but I can tell I'm going to have to experiment.

I do think cooked pasta that's been dehydrated will taste less starchy when rehydrated....we'll see

You are correct, Pasta does turns out better if it's been cooked first then dehydrated.
The Knorr's are still good in a freezer bag but I stick to the rice ones for that. I really like the Steak Fajita mix with some added beef jerky (I make the jerky myself). Simply put the jerky in your boiling water to rehydrate it first, then pour it all into the freezer bag over the rice mix. I also melt a Baby Bell cheese round over it just before I dig into it. I like it with Flat Bread on the side better than in tortillas.

Thanks for sharing! A number of good lessons shared.

I always take a few NyQuil and may even try some more serious sleeping pills, just in case. Multi day trips if you don't get good rest are rough.

Also, +10000 on trekking poles. A set pretty much saved my life on a very rough (hurt knee, lost the trail, bushwacking down the side of a slippery/steep mountain in the rain) about a year ago. I'll never go backpacking again without them. Plus, they serve nice double-duty around camp to prop up the tarp porch, etc.
