    Tips for a FL noob

    Hi guys,
I have recently gotten into hammock camping and want to plan my first overnight backpacking trip. I usually camp twice a year when I go on climbing trips up to Tennessee, but that has always been car camping. I made the switch to a hammock since after a day of climbing the last thing I needed was to sleep on the hard ground. Now I want to get out for the sole purpose of sleeping in my hammock. Can you recommend an area that has good hammock camping this time of year around St. Petersburg? I was thinking of doing the little manatee river loop trail as a nice easy first outing, but I'm not sure how hammock friendly the primitive campsite is there.

Thanks in advance for any sugestions

P.s. I'd love to be able to go to the big hang coming up, but I work retail and its over MLK weekend which means no dice on getting the days off.

I'm sure some St. Pete folks will chime in soon. Too bad you'll miss the big hang. We're trying to put something smaller together for the Jax area. Maybe you'll be able to make it when we get the dates locked down.

You can hang anywhere in the Withalacootchee State Forest near you. Just check the hunting schedule before planning your trip.

Check out the SWFMD site. http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/recreation/ . One I've been thinking about is the Alston Tract of the Upper Hillsborough. No hunting in there. Was also looking at the Little Manatee loop for an overnighter. We will be having a few more group hangs after the Annual hang. Here is another location to track our Florida hangs. https://sites.google.com/site/flhangers/ Oh and welcome aboard from Lakeland.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Thanks for the links. The camping at the Alston tract looks a little more developed then what I'm looking for. It's good to hear that I'm not the only one who was looking at the little manatee loop for an overnighter.
