Any ideas for what to make from this material ?

You know what they say about "One man's junk . . ." Well, Christmas came early when I was told to get rid of some stuff cluttering up a storage closet at work.

What I found was an 82" wide roll of pure white fabric, and it feels just like UnderArmor material. It's apparently a production roll that never made it to production, rolled on a tube and sealed in plastic. The sticker says "HanesWear" and shows a production date from 2008. It also says the roll is 32 yds !!!

The stuff may be just a bit thicker than some of the sports apparel out there, and stretches pretty well. But it's tough enough that I had a hard time ripping it by hand. Even when stretched, I can't feel my breath on the other side when blowing into it. My understanding of UnderArmor and similar products is that they will pass moisture, yet retain heat. Not sure if it's designed to resist wind. Further testing will be required . . .

I'm thinkin winter sock material - ? Or stretchy stuff-sacks to fit different size loads? Dbl-layer stretch hammock . . . (ok, maybe not)

    Any thoughts?

Wow, what a find! Here's your shareware patterns from Shelby (301 & 302) so you can make a dozen sets of base layer clothes: http://www.shelby.fi/catalog/designs.php

I do like the idea of stretchy stuff sacks for quilts, jackets, and other insulated gear, since you have compression built in.

Hey, neat idea & website! Oddly enough, I hadn't even thought of clothing . . . When I mentioned "winter sock" I was thinking hammock sock.

The more I think about it, if it does prove to have good wind-resistance, the stretchiness could lend itself to some unique ideas for a sock or similar enclosure. Combined with a waterproof base or "floor" as seen in other designs, this sock would stretch when you step out of the hammock so the floor was on the ground, yet would pull it up near the hammock when sleeping. Or maybe a "tarp w/ doors" configuration simply stretched and staked to ground, so it stayed taut and wouldn't flap in the wind.

If it is indeed very breathable, I wonder if it could be used as sort of a semi-opaque bug screen? Here again, the stretch would be a plus.

Gonna have to do to some water testing, freeze testing, and stretch testing, and also get a weight (should this be per sq.yd. ?)

Hold it tight to your mouth and try to blow through it to check for wind "proof-ness".

I could very easily be wrong, but Hanes' "thing" is cotton garments and I'm not aware of them using 100% synthetic fabrics.

I'd be leery of using this material for a hammock sock without establishing what it actually is.

    Here's the tag:

Scanned both barcodes, and they come up irrelevant in web searches.

No, it's definitely not cotton-based, feels more like poly or synthetic, just like UnderArmor or similar sportswear.

Tonight I'll search Hanes' athletic wear to see if I can get a clue . . .

Googled "Hanesbrands Inc" and found this...http://www.hanesbrands.com/hbi/Templ...s/Default.aspx...so with Doufold and Champion in the mix, synthetic wicking fabric is likely.

Make tee shirts or a heavy sock.

Before you take the time to make anything with it, why not do a burn test to find out the fiber content.

Here's a burn chart that will help you figure out what you've got there.

If it turns out to be synthetic wicking stuff good for making clothing, watch the line form for yardage...

Beat me to it. We did this in the costume shop I worked in when I was a Theater major whenever we came a cross a remnant that we couldn't readily identify. Works great and will give you a great idea of what the material will be good for.

    UnderArmor = PolyEster

    I'm thinking it's either polyester or a cotton/polyester blend.

I use cotton/poly blend for prototyping canvas gear.
