Excited Newbie from Western tip of FL

Just tried hiking and camping for the very first time and I am in love! Been car camping with son's Boy Scout troop 10 times a year for last 3 years. Got that down. Leaving the vehicles with all my belongings on my back is a new thrill. Heading into the woods is my new adventure.

I work with a group that is very into hanging. I'm eyeballing WBBB 1.1 Dbl, Superfly, top & bottom quilts. Need a pack too. And Jet Boil. And ...

Huge news is son & I will join Boy Scouts at Philmont this June!!! Couldn't be more excited ... and nervous. Nervous about all the gear to buy. We've begun planning at least 3 weekend tune-up hikes with the boys. Hope to hike many times with the co-workers too.

I intend to buy the right gear the first time, but am a tight wad. So, here I am.

Thanks a ton for any recommendations and wisdom y'all care to share.

    Welcome!

If you want a close up look at a large variety of gear before buying, come to the 3rd Annual Florida Hang next month in Ocala National Forest. There will likely be every model of hammock made there as well as DIY setups.

The dates are January 18-21st, if you are interested. Link is here: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=60647

You can even bring your tent and sleep in it if you don't have gear yet.

A group hang is a great place to ask questions and covet others gear.

Welcome, General. You hail from one of my favorite places on Earth. Used to take my children camping on Gulf Islands National Seashore. I'd recommend it to anyone. Would go to the fish market for flounder and snapper to cook out. Great memories.

Yes, this is great fun and old hands here are a wealth of knowledge, generous, and very decent. The best $10 you can spend is the off-topic feature for donating members. I'm lighting fires with sparks from a ferro rod now, for instance.

Welcome aboard! You've already had possibly the 2 greatest bits of advise given. Group Hangs and joining the donating member's section.

The group hangs are going to let you not only see, but also try out different hammocks and tarps and quilts. And it will allow you to ask all those questions that we all know you have, because we all had them at some point too. The donating member section will provide you with information on everything else, from choosing the right backpack to preparing your own homemade dehydrated meals to getting your knife "scary" sharp to filtering/treating your water.

Welcome from a Pensacola native who's been living near Miami for the last 40 years! Did anyone mention the group hang in January?

Welcome from Kissimmee! I was raised up in the panhandle on the shores of St. Andrews Bay, miss it alot. Let me also encourage you to join us at the 3rd Annual Florida Hang. Its the largest gathering of hammock fanatics in the world, and because of that, there will be tons of information and gear to try out. Hope to see you there!

Welcome from Gainesville! I fourth (fifth? sixth?) the recommendation for Buck Lake in January!

If you've got all the stuff needed for car camping, you're all set for that hang; the farthest hang spots at Buck Lake aren't more'n an half-mile or so from the parking lot.

    Hope to see you there!

    Welcome from Denver!

Philmont should be a ton of fun - definitely on my list to go to. Unfortunately, they don't allow hammocks yet .

Backpacking can be a pure joy in life and is made even better by hammocks.

I have a Blackbird and love it. Tough to go wrong there. The Ridgerunner (Warbonnet'sbridge hammock) is also super comfy. That and Dream Hammocks are also worth looking at while you decide what to get. As others have mentioned, a group hang is a great, free way to see and try out lots of options.
