Any awesome lesser known spots to hike around the NC & VA mountains?

    Hey guys and gals.

Being a NC native I have done my fair share of backpacking/camping/hiking around the mountains of NC and VA. I've spent time around Hanging Rock, Shining Rock, Blowing Rock, Linville Gorge, Rhododendron Gap, Mt Mitchell, & Grandfather Mountain.

My question to y'all is, do you know of any awesome lesser known spots in the NC/VA mountains that maybe I haven't heard of? I'm looking to start camping this spring and I just wanted see things I've never seen before!

    Thanks for the help/suggestions everyone!

hey citrus: welcome to the forum!

if you're looking to explore VA, I strongly suggest most of the the other areas in Mt Rodgers, save for Rhododendron Gap--for instance the Pine Mountain loop, or linking the AT with the Iron Mountain Trail, or just any of the trails in the "crest zone". You could spend a week there looping around, all with good water & camp.

also, the stretch of AT from Pearisburg to Daleville is great too.

further northeast from there are great wilderness areas like Saint Mary's Wilderness, Ramsey's Draft Wilderness.

if i cant get down to the Mt Rodgers area, i will go to Dolly Sods in West Virginia which is worth checking out.

Curtis Creek between Old Fort and the BRP in NC. It's a large area with some lightly used sections.

Go to Mount Mitchell and follow the Black Mtn. trail. The Black Mtn. backcountry area is very lightly used. Lots of it is over 5,000 feet also making it a good summertime trip. You will be cold on summer nights.

The stretch between Bluefield, WV and Wytheville, VA on I-77 is beautiful. I pulled over at random along there a few years ago and spent a few days in the backcountry there. I didn't see a soul.

Get off at Bland VA, exit 52, and drive a few miles east on state hwy 42/52. The AT runs a few miles from there, and there are a lot of spur trails off of it there that is very lightly used.. Now that is one nice area and is very desolate area but easy to get to.

Iron Mountain Trail. It used to be the old AT before the ATC rerouted the trail through the Grayson Highlands.
