    BB vs. Traveler

    Hey gang.

I've got this narrowed down. I'm still sleeping on the ground for this winter, but come springtime I'm likely to pull the trigger on a Traveler.

My friend recommends the BB...so I'm wondering if there are any structural differences between the two? Superficially at least, it seems that the Traveler is only lacking an integrated net.

Not a deal-breaker for me; I have a net, I'm sure I could jury-rig it somehow for the once or twice a year I might need one. (Primarily at summer camp (BSA)).

No tarp is also not a deal-breaker...I know how cheap they are at Campmor. (Yes, I know there's a weight penalty, but I'm not an ounce counter and any hammock is going to be waaaaaaaay lighter than my current tent.)

Anyway....(I'd go sooner, but it got bumped to the "After Chemo" list.) Soon.

    Soon.

No structural difference. The fabric bed of each is identical.

The BB has essentially 3 features. 1 is the net, 2 is the shelf, 3 is the 'footbox'.

The first two of those are self-explanatory, but the third is sometimes misunderstood.

The footbox is a triangular piece of fabric that is sewn to the side of the hammock (on two sides of the triangle). That doesn't affect the lie of the hammock, but it prevents the netting from reducing the room inside the hammock when it is tensioned.
“I think that when the lies are all told and forgot the truth will be there yet. It dont move about from place to place and it dont change from time to time. You cant corrupt it any more than you can salt salt.” - Cormac McCarthy

I've had many hammocks w/built in nets but always went back to an open hammock. I prefer take what I need (bug net/winter cover) depending on what time of year it is. The one hammock I have yet to try is the Danger Bird, that one looks better every time I look at it!

The Blackbirds are very convenient with that shelf for storage. That might be handy at your BSA summer camp.
Otherwise, you can't really go wrong with a Traveler. I have both models, but the Travelers get more trip time.

I got both - one for my kid and one for me. The traveller made a nice birthday present - she was totally stoked to get it.
So far the BB goes with me more.

The shelf, net, and foot box is the primary reason why I got the BB. Plus great review there Water Monkey....

Seeing the Vid was very helpful. Looks like Skypainter was right...I like the shelf and footbox thingy.

OK, it's a BB on the list. Eyeing the April trip for my first hang now. (Troop 250, Waltham MA - we're out every month.)

I have both, but prefer the Traveler most of the time. The BB shelf is pretty cool, and I sometimes miss it when in the traveler. One big downside for me on the BB is that it's harder to reach stuff and adjust quilts on the non-zipper side. If you do get the BB and plan to winter camp, I really recommend the Bear Burrito Oven top cover form Arrowhead Equipment.

On the Arrowhead Equipment site, I don't see anything about Bear Burrito Oven quilts. Can you give us a link?
