    Primaloft?

So im going to order some primaloft.
Im a bit confused about the weights. This one is 6oz per sq meter. http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/P...200g::715.html
Would i need to have two layers to get down to 20F.
Need your opinion on this as im ordering soon and dont want to order too much.,

Also is it neccessary to quilt primaloft?
If so what is quilting and how is it done as i just dont get it?

    Thanks
    Jacob

I came into a stock of Climashield that I have been very happy with and it's similar (not indentical, but similar) to Primaloft.

The Climashield Apex comes in 2.5 oz. per yard and 5.0 oz. per yard with a clo factor of 2.1 for the 2.5 oz. and 4.1 for the 5.0 oz. respectively. Two layers of the 2.5 oz. gets you roughly to that 20 degree mark, so my mind is going towards one layer of Primaloft at 6 oz. per yard getting you to that 20 degree area.

I have not used Primaloft, but using the "similar properties" rule...
Happy Trails to one and all.

Watching with interest as I'm keen on using primaloft too as I'm allergic to down. Haven't been able to find much info on what people use in their TQ or UQ.

Climashield and Primaloft seem to have similar insulatory properties.

The difference seems to be that primaloft compresses a little better - but it's a short filament insulation, and can tend to bunch if not quilted properly. So it's not the best choice for large panel projects, like quilts. Much better for smaller panel options, like clothing (vests, jackets, etc.)

Climashield may not compress as small, but it works better for quilts due to the fact that it doesn't need as much stabilization. Given the choice, Climashield would be a better option for quilts and sleeping bags.

YMMV. Try a google search for "climashield vs primaloft" - there are links to threads both here on Hammockforums and other places discussing the relative merits of each. I've only ever worked with Climashield - you just have to be careful not to stretch it when sewing - otherwise you get some misshapen quilts.

Clo is how you rate synthetic insulation. Instead of loft for down its clo for synthetics. Reason being that a 4in think synthetic sleeping bag from Walmart may only be good for 20* and weight 4lbs so loft doesn't work.

Try some Climashield on the outer layer and some Insultex on the inner layer! I get mine from DIY Gear supply!
