Linville gorge or uhwarrie both have opportunities for 1 to 2 nights.

I would highly recommend the Uwharrie and Dutchman's Creek Trails.

Just a hop from Asheboro is the Birkhead Mtn. Wilderness. A couple of nice trailheads, plenty of creeks for water, little trail traffic, really nice there. Google it.

All of the above are good suggestions Gunsfan05. Or, with two days, you could complete your first "mini" section of the AT. Great area of the country we live in!

As some of the others have stated - Uwharrie.

The southern portion of the Uwharrie Trail and the Dutchman's Creek Trail make an 18.7 mile figure "8" loop starting at the Hwy 24/27 Trail Head.

Most of the good water spots are on the western half of the 8. The Trail is well marked and the Ranger Station on the east side of Troy on Hwy 24/27 has basic trail maps in their outside kiosk.

Or you could just do the bottom "O" of the loop which is 11 miles.

Try the gorges state park loop. Almost impossible to get lost, well marked wide trails, easy water, many campsites perfect for one or two people. Park off the frozen creek road access. Going there myself in a few weeks.

I'm drawn to the open country. Its where the world makes the most sense. When I put myself out there I always return with something new.
