    A question about the Porkies

A friend and I are looking to a take backpacking trip this coming May over an extended Memorial Day weekend. I backpacked around the porcupine mountains when I was a kid and would love to go back, does anyone know if it is a hammock friendly area? We would be using our tree huggers of course. I have looked at several different sites with no info. Thanks for any help

We stayed at union bay campground and hung our hammock there without any issues so I doubt you would have issues if you are backpacking. I know they allow hiking during the winter so you may be able to catch someone on the phone at the visitor center.

I hiked/hammocked the Porkies a few nights last summer. While tress abound, I found the scenery a bit monotonous and access to the lakes confounded by vegitation and leeches. Hanging your hammock there will not be a problem.

You are about the same distance to the Superior Hiking trail. Spectatular view of Lake superior and cool geology the whole hike. Consider hiking MN.

Either way, have a great trip.

Its been a few years since I've hiked there, but it was my first hammock backpacking trip. I never wanted for trees to hang from. I too found it lacking the big views of other trails I've hiked. Isle Royale NP, topping that list. (Never hiked the SHT)

    +1 this.

I've only done 50 miles on the SHT but from what I saw it was very hammock friendly.

I did the lake shore trail a few years ago with my hammock, plenty of trees and no rules against them. We had our car shuttled from Lake of the clouds to the Presque Isle campground. I really enjoyed it. Presque Isle is quite beautiful. My avatar is from there.
    Good luck,

It's been a very long time ago (early 80's) but I have camped there in the winter, was a great place! If you are unable to get in touch with anyone at the park office try the ski resort, that's were i ended up parking my car.

I just got my first hammock a few days ago, and went to the Porkies today to see if the roads are open. It's a whole whopping 20 minute drive for me! The South Boundary rd. and the one that goes up to the Lake of the Clouds don't get plowed and are still covered in snow and closed to autos. The woman at the ranger station figures mid May before roads open. It will be wet and muddy in there for a while. Let me know if I can do anything for you, I won't impose.
