I'm yet another hanger with both options; SuperFly Winter Tarp & OES Spinntex Standard for the summer time.

I like the smaller tarp (OES standard vs. deluxe) mostly due to its weight which is near to nothing. I also really enjoy a good view on a summer evening which is made easier by the smaller tarp size. The smaller you go with a tarp, the more attention you need to pay during set-up, they can be unforgiving in a storm if not just right.

I like the MacCat Standard as well. The very recent trend has been larger tarps for winter, but honestly it's not necessary. Does it help? Sure - if the increased bulk and weight are worth it to you, the convenience of a larger tarp can be a good thing. But do you "need" a larger tarp for winter? Nope - we were all winter camping before the 10x11, SuperFly, etc. And most of us still had a great time...

Personally, one of my favorite pictures is the December sunrise in Yosemite, taken from my hammock under a MacCat Standard pitched over an 8'-10' (I think) snowpack. Couldn't have done that with a winter tarp!

Agreed. My first tarp (not counting the Hennessy fly) was a Sportsmans Guide camo 9x9. The coverage was 'adequate', but the views, o' man the views are great from under that 2 ton thing.

I agree with you also. My favorite tarp is still my tried and true BlackCat.

IMO, for most hammocks a cat-cut hex tarp with a 12' ridge length is the best compromise of coverage/weight/versatility.

I agree with Jeff. Big tarps are cool, but you don't need them. Since I've succumb to the ways of the gram weenie movement, I only take my winter tarp if I really have to.

Are you trying to say that since I already had a Macat Deluxe I didn't need that Speer Winter Tarp I just bought? Don't tell the little woman.
