Be prepared for some cold weather. Back in the 70's I was there with a friend and his Scouts and we had a blizzard hit. People were being blown away in their tents. My wife (then girlfriend) still talks about that trip.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

Last year we did Old Rag mtn with a high temp of 19* and a low of 9* ! We had a nice gentle 55 mph breeze to keep us company the first night then it slowed to the upper 30 mph range ! Hopefully we will have better weather than that! I'm just not to sure how well I can navigate the trail covered in snow?

The shrubs give a good indication of the general route during the day. After dark, it becomes a bit more challenging.

I tried Mt. Rogers in the dark one night that is snowed close to 20" with temps in the single digits. Distinguishing the AT from just wandering around on a mountain was not all that simple.

Weather.gov forecasts a few days of snow this week so far. Next week looks warmer.

I'm just hoping Warbonnet ships my sock on time. Looks like it won't be here for this weekend's trip.

If the sock shows up, I can get by with my 9X9 diamond tarp and a little less insulation.

Thanks for the offer. Roan is about as far as I can make it with my work schedule. As it stands, I'd be doing my traditional evening arrival Friday.

I have so far just from the NRV alone 5 people ! So it looks like a nice group lining up! I think and don't quote me on this but including car drop off it takes us around 3 1/2 hours with a departure time from Radford around 1:30 2:00 at the latest! So anyone joining us we are shooting for 5:30 Carvers Gap and if you are early or later we will be up at Roan high knob shelter area! Look for all the Hammocks! Any deep snow and we will post a cancellation and reroute to section 33 on the AT starting at the parking area below the Pine Branch Shelter!

Sounds like you'll be setting up in the dark as well. BTW, the wood supply there is pretty sparse as it has been picked over repeatedly. It tends to be on the wet side as well.
