Have you seen the cheap nylon tarps at Walmart ? I think they are around 5 or 6 bucks and they pack down as small as rain pants ! I'll bring one I think the dimensions are 5/7!

Just got word from a pal at the NWS that snow ice and rain are predicted at 60%the for fri the 10th! Im just not equipped to hike or camp in those conditions! If this is true and the weather sours we are going with the backup hike section 33of the AT north to south.

My trusty Swiss military poncho-cape and some crampons should handle most of the hiking weather. Road conditions would be more of a concern. Friday does look wet in the town of Roan Mtn with a high of 50. Carvers Gap would be closer to 38 or so with Roan High Knob a few degrees cooler for the high.

Shepherding a flock of noobs through rain, snow and ice is quite a bit more challenging than getting yourself through rain, snow and ice. Combine that with a collection of gear that is marginal for the potential temperatures, and you could have a hypothermic crowd. That's not anything to play around with.

Will keep a eye on this may be able to make fri night to the shelter then back out the next day. Some snow and not crazy cold would be awesome. The road is usually decent to the top on the TN side. NC side can be bad. They do not clean it at times.

Hey Wisenber, Medicine Man, et al; what is the usual temperature differential between the town of Roan Mtn, and say, the shelter at RHK? A friend and I are going to try to hike Carvers Gap to Overmountain shelter for an overnighter wednesday; curious what to expect.
It could be that the purpose of my life is merely to serve as a warning to others.

    hmmmm

elevation of the city around 2500 feet.
    Carvers around 5500 feet.
Take off 5 for every 1000.
54F/43F forecast for Wednesday in the city.
Carvers should be 39/28 but even better for you Mr.Dark is no rain that day....I'd take that with a huge grain of salt at Carvers.
Dont remember the gain from Carvers up Round Bald even though I was there last week (lots and lots of ice on the trail, I did wear traction aids) so it will be a bit cooler on your first climb.
    Then its all downhill! HA!
You know that overall it is downhill to 19E from Carvers but you'll still gain probably 5 or 6000 feet--just a vague guess of a remembrance of those hard numbers.
I'm jealous, we're schedule to out again next weekend and I had enough rain hiking last week in it.
