Those are stunning pictures, MedicineMan. One of these days I'll get back up there.

You'll have to take it easier and not let the altitude get to you next time flatlander. Cold and an altitude headache aren't all that enjoyable. Next time take you should take the breakfast trip to Bob's Dairyland and let some hot biscuits do their work.

MisterDark! glad to hear from you again. At least look at the Savage Gulf hang-you too Moondoggy---not trying to hijack this tread.
And thanks for the invite, alas prior plans that weekend prevents, but I've already got the t-shirt on hiking in the Roan system and in every direction from every trail head too many times; and a lot of off trail bushwacking. Believe it or not there is a sole Aspen living (or was) on the flank of Roan Mountain.

Been thinking about a night on Roan don't know if I have enough warm gear though. Got 20* hammock gear under and over quilt and lots of warm clothes.

That's a start. The hammock and tarp options might determine how to build on what you have. Since you're pretty close by, you can monitor the forecast to see if it'll be a 20* night or a 0* night. A thin pad or windshield cover would be enough to boost your UQ into the single digits. Below that, you might need more. A coat and layers on your legs will extend the TQ without much issue.

All sorts of ways to handle cold. You just have to look in your gearbox to see what tools you have to work with.

    I go to a cool web site ! http://www.mountain-forecast.com/pea...forecasts/1916
You can type in any mtn range !
Also Jason Walmart sells this cheap backpacking tarp with grommet holes in it and if you rig it up like an UQ it would work great as a vapor barrier? I've been thinking about taking one along with some Reflectives just in case I get chilly! My gear and the other fellas coming in my group , their gear is rated to 20* also! I add my down coat heavy thermals and down booties to the mix ! I've made it to 9* last year with a 55 mph wind !

It's almost a challenge for me to hit Roan ! The only thing that may stop us is the snow ! Don't want to post hole the whole way!
