    Change sleeping bag insulation

My first sleeping bag for the hammock was a budget bad with synthetic insulation. It takes up the majority of the space in my pack, and needs to be changed out for something better.

I've read a few threads about buying bulk goose down, and was wondering how involved it would be to remove the stitching and syn fill to replace the insulation with down?

I don't know how to sew, and would have to buy the down ~90 bucks.

Should I just buy a Kelty cosmic?

    Thanks

IMHO you would be better to just buy some down proof material and the down and start from scratch.

I think it would be more work getting the old synthetic out than your thinking... Most of my synthetic bags it looks like they actually just sew straight through the top and bottom layers and the insulation... So you would have to rip out every stitch in that case... Just to save $10-$20 of down proof nylon... Not to mention if your making a topquilt your going to want the zipper gone...

To me unless I was really stuck on an extra tight budget it wouldn't be worth the work... Plus you have to keep in mind synthetic bags don't usually have baffles which would be necessary with the down... So you would have to resew in new baffles as well...

I would just start fresh and clean... Or depending what temps you want go look at the 40* go lite top quilt for about $110 and over stuff it if you need to go lower...
Live, Laugh, Love, if that doesn't work. Load, Aim and Fire, repeat as necessary...

I'd also consider that the material the syn bag is made from is probably not down proof, so it's going to leak out over time.
