What are your thoughts when it comes to mild winter camping. High winds and frequent rain. I want something to be completely versitile light weight and something that can be set up in a hurry. My questions are:
1. Draw backs you have about the tarp?

2. What are the advantages?

3. How does it compress in a pack?

Great tarp but for winter, a tarp with doors is better IMO. The Superfly is just a mamajamb with doors IIRC. Its a a bit bigger but still packs pretty small and having doors is more versatile for winter since you can either use them or not depending on the weather conditions. Setting up any tarp can be made easier and more efficient by having the a good guyline system and using tarp sleeves.

you can not go wrong with the BMJ, great tarp, i for one have no drawbacks with the tarp, for the money it is by far one of the best on the market, i have been through a couple pretty good storms with mine (rain, 35mph winds, hail) with no problems, also have the door kit with mine which i find nice if it's a cold and windy combination night....get it, you won't be disappointed

1. Doesn't have doors (see previous post). Doors are good, at least in the winter. Superfly doesn't add much weight.

2. Lighter and smaller pack size than the Superfly.

3. Pretty decent. A good bit smaller than a nalgene.

If you're looking for the most coverage for least weight, I'd look at the 4 season cuben tarp from HammockGear. Otherwise, the Superfly is probably a better choice for high rains/winter. I have a Superfly for those conditions and a mamajamba on order for when the conditions will be just a bit milder and I want to save that 5 or 6 ounces.

Don't get me wrong, the mamajamba is still great and will block plenty of weather, it's just that the doors on the superfly really are great if you need to block lots of wind-blown rain or block wind in more extreme winter temps.

I am thinking I will get the mamajamba doors latter. I have though and eventually turn it into a full on winter tarp. The biggest selling point to me is the tarp pull outs.

I have the BMJ; great tarp, invest in the doors. You can remove them for warm weather and put them on when it's cold. Get or make snake skins to. The stuff sack is nice, but the skins work better for those times you're packing up a wet tarp.
