Hey all, what's the safest way to make a garage hang work? OP, could you post some pics or detail on your anchors in the wall?

    Thanks!

    Side load

I have thought about this before, but never tried it. I bought some eye screws today to put into the studs.

The reason I never did it was because I was concerned about side load. The studs in the wall are there to hold up loads from above. Will the nails that hold the studs in keep it from being ripped out the wall?

I have my screen porch set up for this. It is 16x16. With vertical 4x4 set 4foot apart I can run 3 hammocks side by side easily. Great way to test gear (except tarps). I have Eye screws run into the sides if the posts. I trust the sheer strength of the screws over the holding force of the threads.

I have a big eye bolt in the studs of a finished wall in my basement and nail pops have not happened yet. I used drywall screws in my drywall - but they can pop like a nail does. So far so good.

    dejoha,

We got the biggest kick seeing a picture of our garage on our FB feeds! Thanks!

For those wondering about what hardware to use...we used some pretty heavy duty screw hooks that were 4 inches long. To avoid the side load issue on the screws that were in the side walls, I angled them into the studs so that the suspension is pulling on the screw in an outward direction instead of a side direction. We pre-drilled the holes to avoid any splitting. I don't think we even budged those things. I'm away from home now and won't be home until Christmas night, but when I get back I can take some pictures to show you how I installed them. If you purchase Dejoha's Ultimate Hang app that calculates the forces when hanging, you can maybe gain some assurance that the hooks will be adequate. I just know that we used to hang in a porch swing that was hung using two similar hooks and it would hold two or three of us while swinging, so I'm very comfortable that these hooks will hold.

I'm sure this isn't the only way to get the job done....

    "Trip report update",

I guess you can call it a trip...to the garage. My brother and I spent another night in the garage. If successful hanging sleep could be measured by snoring, we hit the jackpot! He said he had another successful night. I did some tweaking on the UQ and stayed warm the whole night. The temperature got down to 32 degrees. I think the key to my CBS was making sure that the shock chord from the foot end of my UQ ran over my foot. I think the first night my foot was on top of it and that was keeping it from maintaining a tight fit. (I now remember that Shug addresses this in his videos)

We had a lot of fun, and I plan on having more test runs soon. I want to be confident in our equipment when the spring roles around.
