Police showed up for my very first hang!

Thank you for the very amusing comments and the warm welcome. I am strongly considering the offer to visit the upcoming group hang - there is a good poker game in my neighborhood though. I do have nice neighbors. The police were very curious about the gear. Before they left they told my neighbor that there was no way we would actually stay outside through the night.

I am glad to report that overall we are ready to keep trying our hand at hammock fun. I have read many threads here, watched many videos that forum members have posted on YouTube- Shug has remotely inspired a wave of juggling here in the house- nothing broken yet. Going to invest in some Amsteel, and I even pulled our thread injector from the attic in case I get inspired to learn a new skill.

Our gear so far is primitive- a Byer of Maine 108" Lite Traveler- proved to be narrow for the foam rolls and not flat enough for Davey, two Yukon $20 Woot specials double parachute, 11' 6" x 6' 4" , - Joey and I found them to be very comfortable. Each of us had a camping foam roll on the base, a reflector sandwiched in the middle and an egg crate style roll on top, 20 degree mummy bags for a quilt, light gloves, a hat, hot water in a Nalgene bottle inside a sealed bag, wool socks, fleece layers, down coat within reach just in case. This could have held us to single digit temps - I think - though we had no wind at all. Tarps at this stage of our development are just 10 x 8 walmart utility tarps and we only draped them over a ridge line, the boys didn't want to stake them out.

A really interesting story and I imagine one of the most interesting first time stories here. From the pictures it seems as if you have quick access to a near perfect place to practice hanging and camping, trees spaced just right. Happy hanging and Merry Christmas.

Two officers in the family. One is a keen bushwalker, the other not so keen. The one not so keen joined me on a overnight hike recently and by the end, he was stuffed, taken him a week to get over the hike, and his fit. It must have been all the hills.

Great story! Thanks for sharing! My first hang was at Ed Speer's hangout in Hot Springs several years ago and I (along w/everyone else) got woke up in the night by a guy (who had shown up with his tent and capitulated amongst all the giggling and snickering of all the hangers....to try one of Ed's hammocks for the night). The guy slept so well he had a very vivid nightmare and was screaming at the top of his lungs! This was a "different" kind of scare than yours!
