    Stretching 40* down to 25*

I have a trip coming up this weekend(read that as 'no time to order anything')... And I have a 40* shamu that I have taken down to 45 with comfort, my topquilt is a down sleeping bag that is of unknown temperature rating but it should suffice...

How would you go about stretching the shamu down that far... I have a mylar blanket that I know I can add, and the hot water bottle trick, and I always have some hand warmers... Should this be enough or is there another option that I should carry, weight is not that much of an issue to me... I carry 35 lb pack regularly to work as my workout and excercise and my pack weight right now is 30ish including water food and fuel... So a few pounds of security is ok with me..

Trial runs in the yard are the only way to know. Can you sew up a quick wind sock?

That's just it... From where I am at to where it is .. temps vary 25* regularly... So no way for me to test...

Wind sock... I have some nylon of unknown weight(probably heavier than needed) might be able to stitch something up... Does a windsock have to be closed around the bottom or can it just drape over ridgeline and hold in above heat... The reason I ask is I have 40+ hours of work plus Christmas eve and Christmas day plus 6+ hours of travel...

Christmas night will be a good time to test... forecast is 21. I'll have to admit I'll be stretching my setup as well.

Thats a hard one to call did an overnighter last night used a 20* UQ and a 45* TQ with a 1/8 gg pad under my feet and was plenty warm down to 29* think I could have got 5*-10* colder with the TQ and still been good but thats guessing if its very windy that will be a factor to.. also what you are wearing to sleep will weigh heavily But I would have a bailout plan also!

I have an UQ that is similar to the Shamu (diy inusultex UQ). It's 3 layers, but I used a poncho liner for the outer shell for a bit more insulation. It works and works well. The key is to make 100% sure there are no gaps. It took me a while to dial mine it perfect, but a quick insurance would be to use something like dutch clips (or binder clips) to seal the sides real well. I also recommend some sort of draft stopper at the head/foot ends.

The last trick I do is add a trucker windshield screen between my UQ and hammock in the deep cold. This really helps. I'm not sure if the emergency blanket material will have quite the same effect.

All this with a hot water bottle and I've been down into the teens comfortably.

If the wind sock is closed it'll hold the heat better than if open...you can layer up and another tip is to buy some of the hand warmers from Walmart; get 2-3 and activate them; put them in a sock and put that between your legs where the main artery is; it'll help. the other idea is to buy the cheap blue camping pad foam from Walmart and lay on that; it'll help.

Would you happen to have any old sleeping bags you could mod into a pod? Something like Shug does.
