I prefer the pads inside the hammock if I have to use them with a single layer hammock. The double layer hammocks it just goes in the sleeve, obviously. WBG suggested a piece of ripstop sewn to the GG pads to deal with the 'sticky' factor inside the hammock. Seems to work really well.

Can I jump in late ( very late) on this issue? First of all, sorry, but what is a Snugfit, and how can I check em out? I'm trying to put my rig together for a winter hike, and here is what I have &/or can do. I've tried variations of this in the summer/fall, but never hung in the winter... I don't have an underquilt or overquilt.... 1) I've got the 1/4" Goss.Gear pad; 2) I have my BigAgnes, Insulated aircore pad 3) -0- goose down bag... Okay, in the fall, I took my BA sleeping bag, inserted the pad & slept great. Can't roll off the pad when it's all one piece. But for winter, I use the warmer bag ( not BA), so I'm back to sleeping on the pad. I want some advice on what works, makes sense. Assume 20 degree night & assume I like to sleep warm.... Shall I use both pads, just one, which one? I hope this makes sense. Thanks for any advice.

if you put the pad between the uq and the hammock, i think the buckeling effect of the pad is going to push the uq away in spots creating air pockets between the pad and the uq. it may be warmer than the uq alone, and also may be warm enough, but i don't think it's going to be quite as warm as if the uq fits fully snug to the hammock bottom. i.e. pad in the hammock or pad pocket.
I have tried without success to sleep with a termarest in my hammock . i just cant stay on it ... even if i deflate it a bit ... does anyone know if i would have some kind of condensation problem if i put the pad in my sleeping bag
i don't know if there will be room for it in the hammock, the ba bags are specially designed to do that. many use their bags as a topquilt and lay directly on the pad.
I actually just tried doing that for the first time last night. I just had the zipper about 2/3s the way open and then twisted it a bit to put the hood back under my head. Didn't feel lump this way and it's MUCH easier than trying to wriggle your way into the bag to actually close it. Also I could close the hood up much more than if I use it as a regular bag. Was surprised how well it worked. Still I will probably invest in a real quilt soon anywho as my bag is synthetic so it's rather bulky.

And at what starting temps do under insulation or pads need to be used? (is this one of those subjective questions that's individual perference???)
