    Flying and Hammocks

    1st Thread...
Traveling to Jamaica after New Year's for 11 days. Here's my question: Will my hammock and straps (ENO) cause any grief with the TSA? Would not want to check them as you can't lock your luggage these days. Any input is appreciated.

    Merry Christmas!

the only thing you can't fly with is stakes (for the tarp), alcohol for the stove, my knife ( I forgot on my return trip. Happy Birthday TSA). I didn't chance my stove either in case they got a case of the butt.

oh....and IF you DO send you pack through, take off any and all bling.
    Whistles, compass, bandanas, etc
They all will be gone when you retrieve your bag.

Your ENO and straps will be fine.

    Have a great time!!

Stakes and knives should be fine in hold luggage, just not allowed in carry-on.

I just flew out to the east coast with my whoopie/tree strap/toggle suspension and hammock. The TSA didn't even blink. They were much more interested in my hiking boots.

As everyone else says, don't bring pointy, sharp, or flammable things and you should be fine!

And, I see this post isn't related to the long distance traveling that you were talking about.

    Sorry.

If your hammock setup becomes an issue, it will happen upon your return.

I had a drug dog key on me coming back from Canada a couple of years ago. The dog must have been the stoned one because they took my pack apart (I had gone hiking up there) and found nothing. But, down in the dark basement of the Detroit airport, my hammock bag gained significant interest. They actually didn't believe me that it was a hammock and I had to string it up between two big support columns. It was actually kind of a fun event, as I had about half a dozen TSA agents completely distracted by a hammock demo.

The best part was, even after having my pack stripped down, setting up my hammock, then packing everything back into the backpack....I still beat my traveling buddy through customs.

I flew out of Austin last August and had my ENO packed down at the bottom of my backpack. Didn't think a thing about it until the TSA woman asked me if that was my bag and why I was trying to bring on two swiss army knives. I looked at her and said I don't even own a swiss army knife. They immediately took my bag and ran it through again, still convinced I was trying to smuggle knives on board. I had to empty my bag and as I was doing I was asking them where they thought these knives were in the pack. They said it was down at the bottom and then I made the connection. They had seen the two stock carabiners on the ENO and I guess from the right angle they looked like knives to them. I ended up pulling the hammock out of the stuff sack and showing them that it wasn't swiss army knives, stuffing everything back in and having them rescan it all for the third time. Then I was ok to go. Except for the part where I had to manage to fit all my stuff back in the pack. I had spent a lot of time getting it all inside and I have to say it was almost impossible to duplicate. Lesson, keep the hammock closer to the top where it's easy to pull out. You never know, you might need to use it.

Tarp and hammock should always be at the top... after a day of hiking I throw up the hammock real quick and take a break, and usually a snack, then I get around to doing camp stuff... If its raining the tarp goes up first...
