    use a Ridgerest deluxe?

I was browsing and found the Ridgerest Deluxe "comfort series" pad. The large size measures 25x77" and weighs 1lb 10oz with a claimed R-value of 3.1

So, bridge users, I recon I could cut this pad down to fit my pad sleeve @ 25" by 60" and come up with a possible weight of 1 lb 3 oz.

has anyone used this and what do you think of a 3.1 r-value? good to 20° or so?

    look here!

I seem to recall reading some discussions here on HF that suggested that the channels in something like a ridgerest don't play well with hammocks. On the surface, that seems like a reasonable idea - when you're off the ground, those ridges would allow a place for wind to blow through and rob you of heat. I'm sure someone with more experience will chime in soon, though.

Yea I've read about the ridge issues also. I dont think theres really any concrete science about it. Could be wrong though. I've never noticed any issues using my RidgeRest. The 3.1 R-value sounds good. Let us know how it goes.

    Mikeinfhaz,

To clarify "bridge users".... Most will want more length than 60 inches your DIY bridge w/ the pocket you added...If full coverage is the desired effect, the stock pad sounds about right....FWIW, it will fit nicely in the 26x79 pad pocket of the JRB BMBH.

That sounds like 20* is a reasonable expectation to me.... it is cited as 3/4 inches thick.

yes Pan I was talking about my specific needs only*. Im 5'6" and dont use a pad for the head, since already using a pillow and a hat. Tried Reflectix and CCF in one layer and neither is good below 45° (for me)
I dont know if the pad sleeve will reduce loss of heat due to the "ridges" but I think it would prevent premature flattening which is the primary complaint of this pad when reviewed by ground sleepers
the only reason I would use this pad in place of an UQ is the way it opens up a bridge hammock. Seems like a flatter lay. maybe it isnt.
good thing, REI will give a refund if I dont like it!

*full length looks great for the BMBH
(btw, my bud Ryan just purchased one for Xmas- he loves it)

I used one of those (regular size) along w/ a 3/4 length, lightweight, self inflater when I used to... Gulp... sleep on the ground.
Don't know about the R value, but it's pretty cushy for a ccf pad. Still not cushy enough to make the ground feel right though<G>.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

That is my exact system if I'm forced to slither with snakes.

    .../QUOTE]

I agree with you about the flatter lay (and wider spread) with a pad. I have tried my yellow bridge with the JRB down-to-earth pad with pad wings with good success. The width of coverage with the pad wings brings the insulation up to the bottom of the webbing arc at it's lowest point. This is a really good botttom insulation for warm nights, but wouldn't give adequate go-to-ground protection for me.

I have combined the DTE pad with an inflatable foam pad. The inflatable pad by itself becomes too cool below about 40 due to it's width of 20". I could combine both pads for around 1 lb 10 ounces. But a DTE with an inflatable torso pad could get you close to the same weight and warmth, as your deluxe RidgeRest. As an alternative, at about the same weight of 1lb. 10 ounces (but higher cost), I will begin using a Warmlite DAM that is 26" wide. This system is quite a bit heavier than what you are planning. But the widening, flattening aspects when used with the hammock, as apposed to quilts or a CCF pad by itself, I think will prove worth it for me. Also, I will have luxurious go-to-ground capability (as long as I don't spring a leak!)

I've considered one of those precisely because of the channels/ridges. I would think they might help cut down on the condensation issues found with many flat surfaced pads.

Has anyone found that premise to be true?

I can't say it would help, my blue eggcrate ccf still sweats me.
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.
