A great deal of the hike is on the rim of the gorge, not too difficult. We'd love to have you. We generally break up into groups based on varying speeds on the trail. Medicine Man is slow and steady but he always gets there! In camp we all hang out (literally) and check out one another's rigs and simply have fun.

Friday is an easy 8 miles along the rim to Hobbs Cabin. There is maybe 300 total feet of elevation gain in bits and bumps along the way.

Saturday is a shade over 5 tough miles. The descent into the gorge is brutally rocky for the first mile (though it really doesn't descend much in that time. It then continues on with moderate rocks for another mile or so. Then you have small ups and down until you hit Historic Stagecoach Trail. This is a rocky climb of about 900 feet over 1.8 miles. At the next intersection, it is a mostly level mile to the camp.

Sunday is a mostly level day with maybe 6 miles walking out, the easiest of all the days.

If your frame of reference is the Signal Mountain area of the Cumberland Trail, to do the walk up from the gorge to the top about 4 times and that is your Saturday climb. But my opinion is that the climb is no more taxing than the rock scramble down into the gorge. That actually wears on me at least as badly.

Give me some ideas of how much you hike now, and I can give you an idea of what this hike will feel like for you. I live right up the road in Ooltewah and know all the regional trails, so I could probably give you some ideas for training.

At this point, I am committing to an early Friday arrival (prior to 8 AM) and hiking the full route.

    Emcee--woohoo you're coming.

Ftroop-since you have become the trip leader, are we going to run into quota problems with the Savage officials?
