SAVAGE GULF: 7 -10 MARCH 2013 (OFFICIAL DATES) Thread

    Okay,

I will start the official Thread for the Spring Savage Gulf Trip! We'll do a Base camp on Thursday night at the campsite at the Ranger Station.

The plan is to hike the rim to Hobbs Cabin on Friday. Saturday we will hike in and out of the Gulf to the Stage Coach Road campsite. Sunday, back to the Ranger Station.

There are two threads that have led to this:

The Talk It Up Savage Gulf Thread---http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=63108

    and the poll thread

    TN>Savage Gulf>March 2013 Backpacking Hang---http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=63633

    Lets get some confirmations going!!!

I am in for all nights.

I know I will have some vacation days to burn so I may do a couple extra days if anyone is interested in an extended trip.

At this time I can only tentatively confirm myself for Friday through Monday. I will update with any changes. I'm looking forward to it.

I put my vacation days on the calendar this morning. I can't wait.

I wasn't able to make the last get together I was going to, and it doesn't look like I will be able to go to Neo's upcoming hang. This may be my next outing other than preping for this hike.

hi all. i was wondering if there was room for one more? i realized that my vacation days fall during this time and i can actually go. however i have never gone on an over night backpacking trip. i have started hiking on the section of the cumberland trail that i live near. however i'm outta shape and have so-so knees. i do have backpacking equipment as it is a dream of mine to get into backpacking and eventually do some long distance trail like the AT. so how difficult is the route that you guys plan on taking?

A great deal of the hike is on the rim of the gorge, not too difficult. We'd love to have you. We generally break up into groups based on varying speeds on the trail. Medicine Man is slow and steady but he always gets there! In camp we all hang out (literally) and check out one another's rigs and simply have fun.

Friday is an easy 8 miles along the rim to Hobbs Cabin. There is maybe 300 total feet of elevation gain in bits and bumps along the way.

Saturday is a shade over 5 tough miles. The descent into the gorge is brutally rocky for the first mile (though it really doesn't descend much in that time. It then continues on with moderate rocks for another mile or so. Then you have small ups and down until you hit Historic Stagecoach Trail. This is a rocky climb of about 900 feet over 1.8 miles. At the next intersection, it is a mostly level mile to the camp.

Sunday is a mostly level day with maybe 6 miles walking out, the easiest of all the days.

If your frame of reference is the Signal Mountain area of the Cumberland Trail, to do the walk up from the gorge to the top about 4 times and that is your Saturday climb. But my opinion is that the climb is no more taxing than the rock scramble down into the gorge. That actually wears on me at least as badly.

Give me some ideas of how much you hike now, and I can give you an idea of what this hike will feel like for you. I live right up the road in Ooltewah and know all the regional trails, so I could probably give you some ideas for training.

I'm going to try to make the Friday hike to Hobbes Cabin, but I'll have to hike back out on Saturday for work on Sunday. Hopefully all will work out and I'll be able to make this one. Looking forward to getting the chance to meet some more of you all.
