Wenger 30°F Kastern Sleeping Bag

I am looking at the Wenger sleeping bag from sierra trading post. I know most people on here are big topquilt fans and I like the idea but I'm trying to get all my equipment on a budget but still have quality.

So I was wondering what people had as opinions on Chimashield XP insulation (I will be mostly camping in the summer but the nights can get quite cold) and polyester lining.

The deal seems pretty good on these right now and I figure if I really get into this I can always order a good top quilt later. But for now this seems like a good entry level top quilt. But I am really new to this and would appreciate opinions.

If space is important, by all means, save your pennies and buy a down bag. I just bought the Wenger 650-fill 20-deg. down bag from Sierra Trading Post for my girlfriend for Christmas, and it's a very nice bag. The price was quite reasonable. I picked up a Marmot 20-deg. 600-fill XL bag at the same time. It's a low-end down bag, but it weighs considerably less, and packs down MUCH smaller, than the Sierra Designs Climashield filled 15-deg. bag I had been using. Another benefit is that the down bag will last a long time without losing its loft and insulating power vs. a synthetic fill bag.

I would have liked to have purchased a pair of 800-fill top-of-the-line waterproofed down bags, but for the difference of a few ounces of weight, the price would have been double (at least).

I can't wait until I have the money to buy a pair of down underquilts to replace the synthetic ones we have! (They work great but are fairly heavy and very bulky compared to down.)

I bought the 30 degree 800 fill averstall from seirra. It's so sweet I don't plan on buying a tq.

I just picked up a great deal on a zissou dridown 15 sleeping bag. I was looking at UGQ but I couldn't turn down the deal. It's 600 fill down which will do great for now and in the future when I can afford it I will upgrade to a 800+ top quilt.

You won't be disappointed with going with down. It sounds like weight isn't a huge factor but the compressibility will go a far way for you. Good choice!

You got it! Now I'm mostly motorcycle camping. I can see myself getting into back packing in the future and someday upgrading. But for now weight isn't the issue more the size.

Also I like I can vent the bottom with the two way zipper. Hopefully this will work well.
