    Locked versus regular Brummel

I would like to replace the Amsteel dog bones on my Ridgerunner with Dynaglide ones and want opinions on whether to use a locked brummel with, oh about a 10 bury or use a regular brummel and stitch the bury to hold it.
Lastly, opinions on bury length. Is 10 inches enough, too much or just right.
Give me your opinion and explain why, so that I can make an informed, if not scientific decision. I realize there are lots of ways of doing things, but it is nice to know what other folks use; I get ideas and information that I had not considered.
When I have decided what to use and have put it in action, I will post how my system is working, or not working and what I might change.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and suggestions. Happy New Year everyone!

I personally don't do any brummels, I only put a few stitches in the bury. As to length of bury for Dynaglide, I use a total of 5" with a little over an inch of that tapered.

I don't have the link right now, but I remember seeing that you want about 70 times the diameter of the line for the bury. I am assuming this would not include the taper as it will not have the same holding power as the full line.

So, for 7/64 amsteel (roughly 1/8 inch) * 70 means you need at least 8.75 inches buried (plus the taper).

For 1.8mm dynaglide *70 is 126mm or just under 5 inches (4 61/64 according to the online converter) plus the taper.

I find that the outer shell is about 20% shorter with the bury in it. That makes sense since it is thicker. With that in mind, I usually start my fid (bent wire in my case) about 12 inches back for amsteel and 6-7 inches back for dynaglide. This guarantees that there is enough outer shell to completely cover the bury. Hope that makes sense.

A 5" bury with a locked brummel is plenty.

IIRC its something like 21 fids for the fixed eye bury so 5 inches is about right for Dynaglide and a little over 6.5 inches for 7/64 amsteel. My preference is the locked Brummel but its whatever you like.

Bury for Class II ropes, like Dynaglide, is 3 fid lengths. One fid length equals 21 times the ropes diameter. Normally the third fid length is tapered but with small ropes like this people usually just cut the end on an angle and don't taper.

Personally, I'd do a locked brummel just because it's easier than stitching.

Makes sense since three fid lengths for that rope is 6.9".

Thanks for the pic. I have made them that way, once, but couldn't remember how. It's great when you only have one end to work with......RR
