Welcome from upstate SC. Never to old to learn something new. There is a group hang coming up Jan. 4 in Helen, GA at Raven Cliff Falls by the parking lot. Even if you can't stay you should come out and visit and check out the different hammocks. Tents are also welcome. http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=63773 There is also Rev's Frozen Butt Hang in mid-SC in January.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!

Thanks for all the responses & encouraging words.
I am sure I will have lots of questions.
As for the kelty 16,I am already thinking of getting the 12 or even the 9 for hanging times.

Welcome. I find that getting up before the sun comes up helps. You have lots of privacy in the dark.😏

    Gym shorts for me

As another "Georgia Boy", I generally prefer gym shorts. For the times that there is frost on the tarp, I will upgrade to fleece pajama pants.

Most of my camping is with Scouts so I have to be able to quickly react to situations around the camp site. The tightie-whities aren't appropriate when capturing a copper-head that wandered into the middle of the camp at night.

Hope to see you hanging out around some of the local sites.

Welcome from another Georgia hanger, and let me also recommend the Jan 4 hang at raven Cliffs, a lot of fun there.

Welcome aboard from Florida. 62 YO and have only been into the hammock thing for two years and over 1 year fulltime. My only exception is to your statement in the OP is about "real" hammocks. Any hammock that gets you off the ground and provides you with a great nights sleep is a real hammock. A hammock doesn't have to be "bought" to be a hammock. My every night and hiker are both DIY's along with a couple of others made and discarded. I hope that you find the joy and pleasure in hammocks that I have.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Welcome from CA! I used to be boxers-while-camping guy, but now I basically sleep in what I've worn for the day.

Welcome to the site from another Ga hanger. I sleep in gym short when camping. I have a camp site full of girls to deal with so when one needs a midnight escort to the bath house, I have to be ready to run.
