First winter campout with my son!

but unfortunately not in the hammock

I was getting ready to to a back yard hang and test to see if doubling up 2 x 3S hammock gear quilt sets would keep me toasty warm .
I have mine - a phoenix and a burrow and my sons - a custom phoenix (longer) and a down -7º mummy bag.

was laying things out and my 11 year old son decided he wanted to sleep out too -

I don't quite have enough for 2 hammock setups - so out comes the tent

    it's all good -
I set up the 4s winter tent , a couple exped 9DLX mats (with a CCF under each)
for top insulation he had his -7º bag with his UQ over top. I had a 0º synthetic bag and my burrow.

We layer up and head out with an expected low of -5º -
With a suggestion from here - i had a hot water bottle in each bag - WOW - keeps things real toasty all night -

I ended up shedding layers at 1:30 - ended up with just a base layer and a light merino shirt.
he was in his fleece layer and ended up losing the UQ (that was over top) and venting his sleeping bag - I guess thats a good thing being too warm ....

Overall a good night sleep -

now to get a little more hammock insulation and try again

Hot water bottles are like magic!

Always important and fun to get the kids outdoors, even if it means going to ground.

Going to ground isn't bad with an EXPED Down mat - almost as comfy as a mattress
    I'd still prefer the hammock

Just doing insulation inventory - looks like I have enough to try 2 winter hammock setups

its really funny the looks after you tell someone you went camping the other night ( in the snow/cold/winter) they look at you like you are crazy and ask, "weren't you cold?" I say "No, It was too warm we had to unzip the tent for a little air"
