    DIY sleeping bag/robe

Glad I found this site. I'm making my first Homemade Hennessee Asym tomorrow but I'm wondering about another project.
Many, many years ago while stationed in Japan I seen a quilted sleeping robe which was worn like a full length robe but had hand and feet pockets sewn in so that it was also worn as a sort of sleeping bag. It also had a hood. While it was an ancient Japanese design I was thinking that it may have a modern day use as a cold weather sleeping garment.
Has anyone ever owned or made one of these? I'm considering the project but would welcome any help.

This first attempt turned out to heavy, but I'm convinced that the concept is sound.
I need to try again. This time I wont use velcro to close the front for one thing.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Very close to what I remember, except the Japanese version had sleeves and an open bottom. The sleeves had cutouts near the wrist and were closed at the end so that if you needed your hands to reach for your sword you could poke them through the cutouts. Like yours, I would add some sort of drawstring or elastic at this cutout. Also the bottom was open to facilitate walking but there was an inner pouch that you could tuck your feet into for warmth while sleeping. Thanks for the pics.

    like a huge insect!

Can you imagine that emerging from the bottom opening of a Hennessey?

Yes, it works quite well actually, I have a similar bag sans sleeves (Feathered Friends Rock Wren), I actually prefer it to a quilt below freezing.

they now have these, which don't even need the bottom opening. I forsee manny people spotting "aliens" as people wander around in these, in the dark.

whole thing kills the fun of "sleeping bag wars", a classic game where you all get into your sleeping bags, stand up, then desperately try to stay standing up while taking everyone else down. manny a night on camp has been spent playing this game. happy memories

    How about these.

I've seen these on outdoordaily.com several times, but never squeezed the trigger.

I would think those feet would get really dirty around camp.
