Sewing the edges of differential top quilt

    Hi everyone,

I am getting ready to finish my DIY top quilt, and have run into a snag. The baffles on the inside are 6" and on the outside, are 6.5. Is there a way to roll hem the edge neatly?

I need to do a fairly wide hem so that I can attach the omni tape for the footbox. The baffles run short ways.

Best i can figure is i need a small dart on each baffle chamber, but wanted to see if there is a better way.

I remember having this same issue with my underquilt, but since it was on the ends that were being cinched, I didn't care too much and just scrunched it as needed.

    Thanks!!!

I put a dart on my underquilt ends. The length of the dart is equal to the thickness of the quilt. My top quilts have uniform baffles on both sides, but I would do it the same way.

I guess that would have been good to do BEFORE I rolled the two ends !! Maybe I can figure a way to do it that doesn't look too obvious.

    Thanks for the tip!

Kind of regretting not doing uniform widths.

A small dart is a neat way of doing it, but does reduce your loft a bit at the extreme head/foot ends as you're removing a bit of the fabric from the baffle chamber. A simple fold at the seam to make up for the difference in width works fine and will look good as long as you're careful.

You want the outside of each baffle to be longer than the inside. This helps prevent compression of the Down when it is hung from the hammock. My suggestion is to match up each of the baffle walls and pin them, so that each of your baffles has the same amount of "extra" material. Then split each baffle roughly in half and pin in the middle. Then you take each half of a baffle and repeat the previous process. The end result is that you have split the extra material between 4 roughly equal sections of the baffle. This results in fairly small gathers that end up with a neat appearance. If this doesn't make sense let me know and I'll try to clarify.
