    Noobie question

Why do some hammocks have tie outs in the middle on both sides of the hammock, RATHER than one tie out near the "head" end, and one tie out near the "foot" end on the other side of the hammock to help better facilitate a diagonal lay? Just curious.

    Good question.

A "flat" lay is actually facilitated by laying across the fabric of a gathered-end hammock (it forces the material to bunch at certain points and allows for a relatively flat situation). If you lay from the tie out (or gathered end) to another, then you lay along the curve, instead of across it and would not be as flat.

I suppose you could try and gather at more opposite corners and then lie opposite of that, but it would probably cause other problems (like trying to attach a bug net without too much tension, exactly how to tie it off effectively, etc.).

    Great question.

I guess your description makes a lot of sense especially if you are laying asymmetrically.

I have the WBBB and Grand Trunk hammock and they both comes with tied out in the middle of the hammock. I guess, for me the design appeal to the universal 'fit' for various height of a hammocker - both short and tall people.

    Hope it help.

Asym tie-outs on the sides of a hammock are patented.

Putting tie-outs at the center or evenly spacing them along the sides of the hammock, in my opinion, does not infringe on this patent.

Also remember that the tie-outs do not define the shape of the hammock. Your body does that. Tie-outs are simply a means to open up the hammock giving you a more roomy feeling and prevent any loose fabric or netting from hanging down against you.

Even though many hammocks come with tie-outs, many users don't use them.

I have a Hennessey with center tie outs and one with the asym tie outs and I prefer the one with center tie outs over the asym. With the asym the side of the hammock my feet are on closes in on me more when I stretch out. With the center tie outs I have more open space up around my head and shoulders where I need it.
