    dual-use tarps

    Hello world,

I'm new to "hammocking" and backpacking in general, trying to put together a good set of lightweight gear. I'd like to know if there are any tarps on the market that would work well for both hammock and ground systems. I have my eye set on the 12' HG standard cuben fiber tarp with doors (only 6.5 oz!). I'm thinking this tarp could be used on the ground with two trekking poles in place of the trees, has anyone tried this? I apologize if this has been discussed at length, if so I would be happy to be referred to the relevant threads. Thanks!

Absolutely! Tarp camping is fun in itself, provided you can escape the bugs ... or tolerate them.

The goal is to minimize exposure to wind and rain, which can kill warm blooded animals with no coats of hair and fur. We cannot live without water but exposure can kill us. So, a good cover/windbreak is a critical piece of gear. Ideally, you want redundancy. Rain gear is equally important, IMHO. Then, take a space blanket ... and then remember your small ground cloth that can quadruple as a way to get out of the wind and rain.

In general most hammock-tarps will work to keep one dry on the ground, but not all ground-tarps will work to keep one dry in a hammock. This generality is due to hammock length. A tarp used by hammockers will generally be longer than a tarp used by someone on the ground.

Since one of my good friends is a ground dweller, I bought this book:

for her. It was chock full of information, coming from a ground dweller point of view. I used it as a cross reference of knowledge for my hammocking.

I made a 10'x12' silnylon tarp a few years ago, before I got into hammocking. Since elevating my perspective, it continues to serve me very well as the primary tarp. There is enough room to completely cover the hammock and I can actually rig it so that I can close the ends off into doors if the weather calls for it.

Still, like the others have said, any tarp can be set up on the ground with some branches/hiking poles.

    I had succes with TrailStar

Here is the thread I did wrote about it.

    http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=24852

It needs only one hiking pole, the other one is not necessary but can be used.

When I recently tested ground camping under Hilleberg XP 10 I noticed how ingenious TrailStar is on ground use. Compared to TrailStar making a ground shelter with normal rectangular cat cut tarp (XP 10 is sized: 3,5 m x 2,9 m aka 11,5 feet x 9,5 feet) was much more complicated task.

There are several net tents available for Trail star if need to keep bugs out when on ground. (Of course the hammock with netting is also option for bug shelter).

It'll be a bit bigger than you need while on the ground, but it'll definitely work. The HG cuben fiber tarps are on my drool list. You'd be well served in the trees and on the ground by one of those.

One of either the 10x10 or 10x12 would work. They have loops all around the perimeter so you can do multiple configurations of ground tarp setup.

    grounded

On the ground, you only need one pole or one tree.
