I'm not an ultralight backpacker myself, so I can't tell you how significant the weight difference will be if you remove the side flaps, but I actually use the flaps to help with my diagonal lay, so if you're tall, you may need to do the same. But definitely get rid of those carabiners. I'm using whoopie slings now, but plan to move to webbing/descender rings because I like the way those work and pack up better than whoopie slings (don't kill me HF whoopie loyalists!)

I'm with the old gringo on this. Keep the double nest as is and just purchase a lightweight hammock.

    Grand Trunk Ultralight from Amazon.com

Save yourself the headache of potentially destroying a great hammock and get the added benefit of having an extra hammock as either a spare or for sale/trade here for something else you might want.

If you're tall and used to a double nest you will not sleep well in a GTUL in my opinion. I have one, it was my first hammock, and a diagonal lay is not possible for me while keeping my feet in the hammock. I've even tried structural ridgelines and still couldn't get it to work. I'm only six foot too. YMMV, but I doubt it.

I now have a GT Double and I can lay perfectly flat without even touching the 'wings.' This would lead me to believe I could remove them without any issue.

I got my DN on a clearance sale that was selling them cheaper than a single nest. I immediately disliked the suspension system and the sides had way too much fabric for a one person lay. A pair of whoopies and a few minutes with the scissors made it better and cheaper than a new single model hammock.

    DN is 9' 4" x 6' 2" ( 19 inches wider than SN)

    ProNest 8' x 4' 6"

If the wings are 8 inches each that is 16" inches removed making the DN modified to 58" wide or just 3 inches wider than single nest.
If wings are 4 inches (8 inches total ) it would then be 66" wide , 11" wider than SN
I have most of the hammocks and measured them for my post on comparing parachute nylon hammocks. These measurements are from what I had on hand.

But is sort of defeats the purpose if you do not get a comfortable lay. I have a Grand Trunk Nano7 that I got down to 7 oz with whoopies but I don't find it comfortable enough to take out on a backpacking trip as a primary hammock. I just throw it in my pack as a lunch chair or emergency bivy when I go on long day hikes.

I found that just taking the suspension out of my single nest and putting a continuous loop in and a pair of dutch whoopie hooks helped reduce the weight a ton the majority of your weight is in those biners and crap rope.

I agree with a lot that has been said. However, I would suggest simply removing the compression strap and buckle from the stuff sack, rather than removing the stuff sack. I like it to put things such as keys/phone/ect. If you have a ridgeline organizer, then that is less of a issue.

Try looking at the EN mods thread...LOT of good info in here: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=19513

Using a seam ripper, you can unpick the threads on the stuff sack without damaging the hammock.

The stuff sacks are sewn separate from the hem on the hammock so they can be safely removed. It's a significant amount of ounces saved on the stuff sack, buckles, and strap.
