    Hanging from rocks...

I have looked through the forum to answer this question but could not find any threads related to this.

What are safe/reliable ways to suspend a hammock from rock walls?

I have an opportunity to backpack to an area which has rock formations similar to a cave which we can camp in, and I am trying to find a solution in advance to possibly hang my hammock from the rock walls.

Your gonna have to spend some money in the climbing section to be successful. Get your credit card out, for some cams, daisy chains, runners and slings.

Yep,,use cracks in rocks or wedge wood pieces inbetween rocks, or even throw some amsteel over rocks to attach from other sides of rocks if you can. I have done it but you have to use a little inginutitey to accomplish it.

Sounds like a blast! An appropriately rated cam and straps should do the trick - you'll just have to find 2 walls the right distance apart.

If there are cracks available, you might be able to use natural chockstones: http://www.wilderness-survival.net/a...tural-anchors/
Otherwise, as swankfly pointed out, you may have to buy some.

Cams might weigh a dash, as I have always carried about 4 different sizes even when I was whitewater kayaking for emergency kit in kayak. U just never know when you might need them for a emergency even.

Wow you guys are quick! I appreciate the suggestions and will do a little more research on climbing hardware. I just don't know if the cave will have any cracks in the walls or not..

This has been on my mind for a long time and I always check out rocks for hanging spots as I hike by. Climbing runners and slings can be used to go over rocks. In fact, my tree straps are two runners with marlin spikes. If you find cracks, pitons are light but check regs for the legality of using them. I think they are a no no in most wilderness areas if not national forests in general. If you do use them be sure to take them out when you leave.

+1 on cams. They are more expensive than rock nuts but cover a lot more sizes. They are fairly easy to set and remove but keep in mind that all gear is prone to failure if used improperly. That being said I have comfortably hung from a rock nut about half the size of an ear bud headphone
