thanks MrClean417. I actually live in a place where we don't have any trees, so it isn't really an option.

Another thought...politely ask her to sit with you for a few minutes, and bring her here and show her this thread.

Let her read the responses from all of the "adults" (LOL...my wife knows that I'm a Grandpa and still the biggest 'kid' in the house!).

Show her some of the indoor stand options that have been outlined on the DIY section, figure out the costs of making one and how you can personally fund it, and let her wrap her head around what you're asking and why.

If she still says no...the answer is no.

But, if you can calmly and practically help her see the answers to her concerns as answered by the "experts" here...that might help.

One other thought...and I mean no disrespect to you (or anyone else)...but have you thought about WHY you want a hammock in your room? If you've got a good, valid reason for it...and can articulate that clearly...it might help sell your case. If you just want one because it's a cool idea...well, while it is a cool idea, it'll be harder to convince her that it's worth the time/money/effort to implement.

I was going to say what Owl said but he already said it so I would say read what Owl said again.

Write the report. Post it up here first and let us old fogeys take a few whacks at it, I mean make editiorial suggestions. Persuasive writing is a big part of what I do for a living (and a whole lot of the folks here) so we may be able to give some tips on style, etc. Then you can take whatever suggestions you think will help...

I am one of those kids who did exactly what i wanted to do.
Step 1 go get the plans to your house and find some nice sturdy beam
Step 2 get a hook that can go into this beam to carry your weight
Step 3 put hook into the wall with the help of your dad, forget the mom
Step 4 Mom will be mad, but hell you will now have a hammock in your room

The operative phrase being "with the help of your dad". If your Dad helps you, then you have permission.

I get what you are saying, but I think the OP may not have the situation where Dad will go along. When I was 15, I was not exactly my folks' favorite person. I did a lot of stuff that was less than "fully appreciated" by the parents. So, being a Dad myself, I try to demonstrate how a responsible oldster gets what he wants.

Oh, and BTW, I like all of IL. Check out my blog to see what I mean.

thanks again guys. I built myself a small hammock, using actually my bedsheet and the frame of my bed. it's a bit small, but it's comfy and I didn't need any parental help (but I have yet to get parental approval). I plan to throw all my stuffed animals into it and burrow under them at night.

Also, I've been reading on here, and my room (which is 10 feet on the side I could put a hammock on) would probably be too small for anything you guys (or girls, sorry) have.

If/when you get permission I think it would work for you. If you make your own the recommended length is your height plus 2ft, if memory serves me. That will leave you close to 2ft on each end, once sag is accounted for, to have stands. I'm sure you can find the material for the hammock for less than $20. If you're patient you can find poncho liners for about $15 each which make really comfortable top and under quilts. That leaves you with about $100 of your budget for the stand. I have no experience with stand building, but that sounds doable.

This site is a wonderful source for information but if you want some more reading you should see if your library has Hammock Camping by Ed Speer and The Ultimate Hang: An Illustrated Guide to Hammock Camping by Derek Hansen. Who knows, books might help win your mom over too.
