Ive done this quite a few times actually, my circle of professional arborists that I hang out with got me into it a few years ago. They termed it as "treecamping", which I really like. The gear and techniques are very sound. And I can tell you from my days as a full time production tree climber, I never had a single day I ever worried about or doubted my gear or techniques. THe tree is the real variable, but good inspection and identification practices can calm that variable significantly.
I have both a Portaledge and an item by New Tribe called a "treeboat", basically a take on a bridge hammock. Portaledge is much easier to pitch, treeboat is my favorite though, much more comfy.
Nothing quite like waking up to a snowy sunrise at 80' or so...
