    VIDEO: Painted Canyon Trail

Sure, it was only a day hike with the family, but when you do it with 7 children every hour feels like a day--if that's the case, then this was a four day trip

The Painted Canyon Trail is close to Joshua Tree in Southern California, and you can see the Salton Sea as you drive up Painted Canyon road. So many lines, shadows, and contrasts when you get there... it really is breathtaking. And the weather was perfect.

The fun part was watching the kids' reaction as we got further and further into the trail. They're used to the Sierras, and this was an entirely new experience for them--so many shades of brown that when you look at the sky you realize that you never knew what blue was until just that moment. As the canyons got higher the kids got more amped about being there. There are also some very narrow canyons that made my kids feel like they were at the bottom of the world.

Of course we didn't get nearly as far as I would have liked, but it was enough, and the kids keep asking if we'll ever get to go back...

We'll see what Santa can do

    Here's the video for proof

Bus, nothing he needs a vacation. I'm exhausted after watching a 3 minute video.

Very beautiful family you have there. Looks like a great time was had by all. And I recognize that look you got at 1:50. I get that a lot too.

I thought of that thread as I was walking around looking at all the rock, and nary a tree from which to hang (cams are a hangers best friend in the desert)

Thinking about a big rig instead of a bus--throw the little demons in the back and let them make all the noise they want

Seems like I live in that look

The only thing it was missing that makes it the patented "The Missus 'look'" is an eyeroll at the end... she must have been getting tired.

Glad to know I'm not the only one

7 huh... and the misses. I feel shell shocked after a trip with one kid. If I bring my daughter I probably wouldn't get out of the driveway before cancelling. Good job. The important thing is not how many you brought, its coming home with the same amount.

I learned that lesson as a kid

When we lived in Mesa, AZ my mom took the family and my 2 cousins to Phoenix. After a couple grueling hours spent shopping at Marshalls, we all piled into the van and headed for home. About 20 minutes into the trip my cousin says, "Hey! Where's Kasey?" The 20 minute drive back to Marshalls was the longest one of my life wondering if my 6 year old sister would be there when we arrived. She was (she was telling stories and entertaining a group of employees).

First thing that happens: head count!

BTW, it's okay to come back minus a few... just so long as it's on purpose

Great road trip there Timaba, and those little Timabas & Timabalinas are adorable!

Mrs. Timba at 1:50... priceless! (yet eeerily familiar)

Climb, jump. Climb, jump... ad infinitum

I don't think there was a rock in that canyon that didn't get scaled or jumped off of. I was like that too when I was their age, and it makes me wonder why gravity has suddenly decided to pick on me now that I am older... if there isn't a pool of water or pile of mattresses beneath me I'm climbing down, not jumping
