Prototype Hennessy Hammock

I have the idea in my head. I am going try the prototype with an old flat sheet and some paracord (tested to 900 pounds)

Anyone know if I can buy the tree huggers?

Also how does one go about tying their hammock to the tree?

Paracord has a stretch to it. I would look more into spectra.

For tree huggers, some have used seat belts, you can buy webbing from Ed Speer, or you can get some from a climbing store.

Look into using webbing like Ed Speer does and a 4 wrap knot. There is also a thread using desending rings.

I forgot to add, make sure to post pics and instructions when you are done. I am interested to see you hammock and how it is made.

If you haven't yet, definitely check out his site. Great ideas, links, and instructions.

I don't use cord to the trees though - like Hammock Engineer suggested, I use Ed Speer's rated poly webbing. Jeff has some descriptions of different suspension methods on his site, including some webbing designs.

Thanks! Will Paracord work for now? It is all I have on hand and I really want to get this prototype done so I can start making the real deal!

It should work for now. 900 pounds should be enough. I over design and shoot for 1200, but I also probibly weight a little more. I have snaped 550 pound para cord pretty easily.

IF it's actually rated to 900 lbs. it should be alright for testing. I'd be careful though - all the paracord I've seen or used has been "550 cord" - only rated to 550 lbs., which is NOT enough to hold the average person.

Well I just measured the bed sheet that I am using and it is a little too short for me to try. So it seems it will be for my 11 year old son who is about 60 pounds! Paracord should hold him!

Another tip. Make sure you hem the edges or the whipping and support will pull right off. I usually pull on my hammock a couple times before I climb into it for the first time. After I get it, I usually like to jump around and swing. Mainly because it is fun, but also if something is going to fail it should fail then.
