    Fat guy from West Virginia...

Just wanted to say hi. New to backpacking and overnighters. I would love to try hanging...been reading and now my head is swimming. It seems like there is so much to it...not sure where to start or how to start. I'm 6'2" 290...and open to suggestions. Thanks and look forward to hanging out at this great site.

Hey noobee, I have an oversized buddy who uses a Warbonnet Blackbird 1.7 Double. It's the Cadillac of Hammocks and it's rated to over 400 lbs. It's a great hammock. Those who use them become instant fans. Check them out at www.warbonnetoutdoors.com.

    Enjoy!

Thanks for the welcome and suggestions. After some reading, my head is still swimming by the way, I have come up with three options that look like they may be good ones.

The Warbonnet Blackbird 1.7 Double like suggested
    An ENO Doublenest
One of the Hennesy Hammock offerings
And a Wilderness Logics Night Owl

All look sturdy enough, big enough, and the reviews are good. I guess it will come down to price and weight. I am not a weight weenie, yet, but I would like to start whittling down my base weight. Right now, I'm not sure where I am at, but I do know my current tent weights in at a tiny bit over 4 pounds. That doesn't include my sleep system which is a BA Buffalp Park bag and a BA Aircore mattress. I'd guess there's another 4+ pounds. So I am thinking that I can easily knock several pounds off by going with a hammock and tarp, down top quilt, and either a down bottom quilt or something like a Hennessy Hammock Double Bubble Radiant Pad. Who knows. Still lots of reading to do which I guess is part of the fun.

    Anyways, thanks again.

Welcome! Sounds like you've got good ideas about gear possibilities, and there's no shortage of great hikes near you - a good start. Are you familiar with the White Rocks Hike proposed by Xtrekker? Haven't been there myself, but it looks interesting.

Hello FP - from one noobie to another - welcome. If you've got a sewing machine DIY is always an option if you're on a budget.
