    Snakeskins vs double-sided stuff sack

    Hi All,

I have a Hennessey Hex 70D tarp with a continuous ridgeline utilizing 1.75mm Zing-It and Dutch Stingerz. I want to make it easier to set up and so I'd like to hear opinions on getting the Hennessy snakeskins vs getting one of the double-sided stuff sacks (e.g. Jacks r Better Speed Sack).

Seems like both options make setup easier and faster, but I don't have experience with either, and would love to hear from those of you who do.

    Thanks!

I like the snake skins for a tarp. It's easier to keep the tarp off the ground and keep it from blowing around while you are getting your ridge line set up. It's also very quick and easy to use when taking down the tarp.

    Snake Skins

I've been using Snake Skins since I started hanging in 2003. With the tarp in Snake Skins, you can tie it off to your trees, and not deploy it until your ready. IOW, I've got it hung and ready to go if it starts to rain. With the speed sack, you could have it tied out to one tree, but would still have to tie it off to the other, and adjust it to cover the hammock. Some times, I'll set it up all the way. I'll then, wrap it back up in the snake skins. I'll leave the stakes in the ground as well. With this setup, I can have it ready to go in a few mins at the most.

I'm sure someone has came up with just as quick of a method with the speed sack as well.

+1 on Snake skins. I think one long piece of snake skin is a better option. But for CF tarp, it is difficult to get to slide easily.

i used snake skins, but when i sold it all i had left was a bishop bag.it stores more uniformly with the bishop bag,but the ease of the snake skins are hard to beat.

I've done the bag thing, the snakeskin thing, and even the Velcro cable tie thing. Go with the snakeskins (or another method that allows the tarp to be tied to both trees, ready to go if the skies open up at 4 AM), preferably breathable ones (so that your tarp can dry as much as possible during the day while you're moving from one campsite to another).

Our very own MountainGoat sells mesh snakeskins, custom sized for your tarp with guyline pockets for your CRL.

Or, if you feel up to DIYing, there's always this handy guide.

Or, if you want a ready-made option that's close to home, Lowes carries Velcro straps that can be added to your ridgeline and then wrapped around your tarp (I've used them with the Hennessy Hex, and 4-6 of 'em will do the job, depending on how poofy you want your rolled tarp).

    Hope it helps!

I use three bungie hair ties... One on each end (doubled in my case) and one in the middle. Same exact effect as snakeskins but cheaper, lighter, easier to get in place, and allows the tarp to dry a little while bundled. Simpler is better in my book. HYOH.

Started with a traditional stuff sack, moved to skins and now dbl sided bag. I will be going back to skins, much easier deployment and better control in wind.

How are you attaching them? Are they around the rolled up tarp like bracelets on an arm or are they larks-headed around the tarp? Basically, do you have to push them down to the end of the tarp and onto your ridgeline or can you just take them off?
