If you have electrical friends you can probalby get it for free because electric companies will barely use it then they will toss it. I have about 4 ft in webbing and a 6 ft whoopie attached to a dutch whoopie hook and a continuous loop inside my hammock.

And I'm still playing with mule tape. I do not yet endorse its use for everyone or every tree/situation.

Dyneema runners instead of mule tape

Mule tape is just a thin polyester fiber strap, about one third the strength, by weight as Dyneema.

If price were less an object, about 2/3 the weight of whatever polyester strap / tree-hugger one uses could be saved by using Dyneema runners /slings /cordelettes, used by climbers. eg http://www.outdoorgearlab.com/Climbi...d-Dynex-Runner A runner around the tree distributes the hammock load across a 0.8" surface.

Obviously the material they are made is out there; it just isn't sold at retail.

I don't usually count grams, but since you asked, I weighed. I have 2 tree huggers, 7' long with Dutch buckles and Dutch clips, and two whoopie slings. I didn't check the length of my whoopies, but a total weight of 171g. Not included in this weight are the 2 continiuos loops and Dutch whoopie hooks, that are on the hammock.

As for being able to shorten the length, if the trees are close enough, I don't even use the whoopie slings. I hook the loop right on the Dutch buckle. I have done this quite a few times. I do still carry the whoopie slings, to make sure I have enough length........RR

well I'm using shorter huggers w/ dynaglide extensions...so I dont expect and tree damage. Funny thing is, Dutch made my UCR's w/ whoopie hooks on them. I was expecting/hoping for bigger weight savings over my whoopie slings, but they weigh the same. UCR w/ whoopie hook and whoopie sling are both 10 grams

    The cost of dyneema straps

It must be super expensive to prevent people with "hammock madness" from purchasing them?

Ballpark...what would say a six foot dyneema tree strap cost a guy?
