Quilting synthetic insulation

So does anyone know of any good how-to videos on how to quilt in synthetic material? In my case I will be adding either Primaloft or Climashield to my first DIY underquilt and this is my first time ever using a thread injector.

Quilting will, if I understand your intent, compress the insulation, creating cold spots. Tacking would be better.

If you go with Climashield you don't need to do any quilting. Just sew it into the perimeter and go.

For my synthetic uq and tq, I did as pgibson wrote and sewed it into the perimeter seams. Then, just to make sure it didn't do any shifting on me, I ran a 8-10" line of stitching at top-ish, middle, and bottom-ish. Seems to be working well!

Here are the excellent DIY KAQ Instructions on every step of synthetic insulation quilt making.

Scroll down to "Part 6: Quilting" for directions on using "quilting loops" to stabilize the synthetic insulation. It's quick and easy, works well and does not compress the insulation like stitching.

I was nicely informed by my mother that this method produces a comforter, not a quilt.

Quilting loops is what I was calling tacking, I stand corrected.

Because the KAQ instructions calls it quilting loops, that's what I have repeated. Since my quilt is really a comforter because of the loops (according to mom), maybe there is another name.

I can't speak to Primaloft, but Climashield is stable enough that it does not need nor would benefit from any quilting loops. Quilting loops may have their place if you see the need to pull the bottom shell up closer to the uncompressed Climashield in order to minimize the air space inside the UQ. If you make the quilt with correctly sized differential cut on the shells, there is no need for the quilting loops.

It's not a video but there is a great easy pattern on Diy gear supply site. It is for a uq with ix, but I'm sure you could use the pattern for climashield or primaloft. I made it with ix and am very happy with it.
Next project will be the tq. I'm undecided between primaloft and climashield. I've read the primaloft one is softer AMD compresses better. I may throw in a layer of ix. I like it a lot.

True, as long as we are talking about under quilts. Top quilts are a different matter, and benefit greatly from tying everything together. A top quilt is like a sleeping bag or a pair of pants, in that you sort of "wear" it. Lining that can't reach out and ensnare your feet as you "put it on" is all good.
