you can hammock the entire AT... can't hang at the huts in the whites, but, it's easy enough to avoid them and stay at the campsites/shelter areas.

Lots of pros/cons for tent vs. hammock for an AT thru hike.
I did both during my hike, mostly because my lack of winter hanging experience, and I'd have to say the hammock is a better choice IMO.

I chose to hang mainly to be off the ground.

Fantastic thread. My plans for an AT thru hike are in the works but won't be reality for at least several years unfortunately. But that gives me lots of time to research and gain experience so I am ready when the time comes.

Good luck on your journey! I'm def jealous of you. I dream of being able to do it one day but not sure I'll ever be able to take several months off of work to get it done :/ Who knows, not gonna say never!

I thru'ed in '09 with my hammock. I committed to the hammock 100% and didn't even carry a ground pad, except for two sections: I carried my Thermarest thru GSMNP, where hikers are required to sleep in the shelters unless they are full, and I carried it thru the Whites where I did work-for-stay at a few of the Huts and slept on the dining room tables.

It would be easy enough to hammock through GSMNP, but it is in my nature to follow the rules unless compelling circumstances force otherwise.

For me the 2 biggest pros of the hammock vs a tent are:
    1) Comfort
    2) Ease of finding a spot. I sometimes would arrive at a shelter in the afternoon, relax, wash up, get water, cook and eat dinner, then pack up and walk a few miles until dusk, when I would pick a couple of trees alongside the trail, hang my hammock and go to sleep. It would be harder to do this with a tent as you would need some assurance that tent sites would be available where you stopped.
