The 9 has a higher R value, so should in theory be warmer. It's also heavier and bulkier.

I use a 7 and it seems plenty warm to me, although I might pick up one of the 9s just to try it out. At those prices it's hard to beat. I believe my local REI has some of the 9 standard in stock and on clearance.

I usually inflate my downmat about 3/4 of the way and find that very comfortable. My fiance, however, prefers hers fully inflated in the hammock, so it's a matter of personal preference for comfort rather than what you're "supposed" to do. In general, the less air you put in it, the better it will conform to the shape of the hammock, while the more air you put in, the warmer it will be. The trick is finding a balance that suits you.

    The 7 is rated to 0 F, the 9 is rated to -20 F.

Yes, that's what I was wondering. You don't have any choice but to fill it with what's available, which may not be saturated.

    Thanks for the tips, all!
They sound really sweet. Now I really want to try one out.

I'm not a big fan of foam pads or segmented pads, as they seem too bulky. But this looks like it would pack pretty small. Plus, the warmth:bulk ratio of goose down is incredible. The R value on these is great. 0 F and -20 F .

Any condensation on really cold nights inside the Exped DownMat baffles?
Any other concerns to the Exped DownMat?

Those ratings are for on the ground, though. IME, I'd add 20F to it for hammocks.

    Hey Jeff,
Are you saying the ratings would be...
    The 7 is rated to +20* F, the 9 is rated to 0 F.

    Or the other way around...
    The 7 is rated to -20 F, the 9 is rated to -40 F!!!

    Thanks in advance!

I was comfortable in the 7 until ~20F. It was windy, though - out of the wind it might get closer to 0F.

Sounds true. The ground would offer some insulation rather than having the Exped exposed to wind/cold. Still, very impressive and would be kinda comfy to sleep on.

Any thoughts if using the Exped allows you to sleep more flat in the hammock?

It's very comfy and it does make the hammock feel flatter. It's thick enough that I usually don't even use wings...I sit up high enough in the hammock that it can't squish my shoulder insulation.

Looks like a great deal on the pricing. However, I checked the weight and the Exped 7 is 40 ounces. That is 1 pound more than my BA Insulated Air Core which has a lower R-value, i.e. not as efficient. My question: is the extra pound of weight on the Exped worth it for long distance hiking?
I think I can live with my BA and the JRB Nest for now, even though the pricing looks tempting. Maybe I could use one for my Scout camping activities - trucked to most sites.
