Seven feet seems to be a good starting point to me.

30" short piece standard eye and bury (based on Samson's whoopie sling info)
92" long piece, 2-3/4" fixed eye (made larger to fit over toggle)

That's the numbers I've used for years making mine, ends up around 6' overall.

In response to the above, if you're following the concept in this thread then the shorter piece needs to be muuuuch longer than 30" since you wills have a bury for both ends. For Dynaglide UCRs I found that 46" needs to be your starting length. Probably only 4" shorter for amsteel.

As I stated above those are the numbers I've been using for years, a couple dozen sets at least..... Once you've made a few sets the prusik gets easier to do and added length isn't needed. The bury (2nd bury) for the tail of the prusik MUST be tight to the line, a bit of a challenge at first.

I'll be amazed if this doesn't get stickied. Thank you for the info- I had tried UCRs on a previous setup with mixed results. I'll definitely be giving this a shot; and it may well end up becoming my mainstay- I already like whoopies, and still like the idea of a suspension that gives me that adjust-ability w/ less material.

I have found that in some cases I could have used a longer cord, especially in areas where trees were farther part or large enough that my tree straps didn't provide much length (toggle close to the tree). Having a longer tree strap is heavier than a longer UCR but I don't hike so I can use either method for added length

I just made my first set to replace whoopies and so far I like them a lot. I used dynaglide along with 5' dyneema huggers from Myerstech and whoopie hooks spliced onto the UCRs. The entire setup weighs 1.8oz. Pretty astounding that my body weight can hang from that.

I made another set of UCR's yesterday incorporating the loop for making the prusik shown in Seb's post....my first pair I just used the free end to make it off.... Tested them yesterday afternoon while making some adjustments to my cammy hammy's RL..... it didn't slip a bit. The bury for the constricting part is about 9" compared to the first set I made, which was about 6".... I used orange amsteel 7/64 and they're about 6 ft long.... Thanks Falkniven for the OP and Seb for the pics using the loop for the prusik.

thank you all for the info. did make the ridge line before finding this thread but made with a short bury considering it won't have full weight. this thread was very helpful for the suspension. i do generally weigh around 200lbs. and opted for the 12in. bury. measured out to 16 for the splice and one is 13in. the other almost the same. neither ucr is exact but close enough. was a bit wasteful on the tag ends of the constrictors because didn't know for sure how i would like to finish them. think they will be loops and wrap them in a prusik.

    thank you very much
