Adding 3 loops on the left help to hold the prusik better...

Although that shouldn't bear weight as shown here...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw6P3...mbedded#t=324s

The whoopie hook should be pulling one end of the 5" constrictor, and the other and should be held up be that prusik to keep it from slipping like shown in grizz's video in the link above. It acts like a Chinese finger trap, so as soon as weight is applied, it should hold just like a whoopie. Not quite sure What's wrong honestly. Some things I left out due to so many great write ups on them already like making the fixed eye, or that you need to add about half an inch when measuring for the constrictor because it will shrink when you pass a cord through it. Looks right from what I can see though...

I too have been considering switching to UCRs to save bulk and weight. This and SGT ROcks recent video have convinced me to try. Great pictures and an easy to follow tutorial. Thanks, fallkniven.

Noob question: what is the use of the taper? I've never used one in any of the maybe ~10 sets of whoopie slings I've made. I almost feel dumb asking, but I honestly just don't know.

Okay...That's cool. I often hook my empty pack to the end of my hammock, but it slides all the way down to the hammock and I end uo kicking it at night. This would prevent that, but it would allow for water to get on it becasue it'd be before the water break... decisions decisions.

The taper is called for in the manufacturer's splicing instructions. It's purpose is to make a smooth transition at the end of a bury causing less of a stress point which would lower the breaking strength.

I've been following these instructions when making whoopies.

    "1A
Leave tail at full volume. Just cut end at
    an angle, then tape."

The manufacturer never mentions tapering, that I've seen, so is it really necessary??? IIRC I did taper my first whoopie and found it made whoopies much more difficult to construct. A smooth transition makes sense, but apparently cutting the end at an angle achieves the same thing??

"1E ...Insert fid and tapered tail at mark C..." So does tapered mean tapered or full volume cut at angle?

I use the full volume angle cut while feeding the rope through itself to make the locked brummel and cut the taper when I'm ready to pull the bury.

Sampson Eye Splice instructions with taper.

"Is it really necessary?" Lots of hangers are getting by without it, but I'll continue to taper for maximum strength.

    Been Hanging with My UCR's

Thanks fallkniven. I followed your instructions, and made a pair of UCR's out of my Whoopie Slings. They work great, and not a single problem at all.

I'll be making a pair of UCR from scratch after I get another pair of Whoopie Hooks from Dutch.

I just made a pair of UCRs, it took about 30 minutes. I really like the look and simplicity of them. I will trade oiut my whoopies for the UCRs and give them a try! Thanks for the great instructions.

Also, when splicing cord smaller than amsteel, tapering is definetly needed. It's a nightmare without it. Amsteel I can get away with splicing without tapering, but not dynaglide.

Sweet, I'm glad it worked for you.

First picture Here is the basic setup. The tail after the Prusik knot hasn't been trimmed down yet due to a sudden complete lack of faith in my ability. :-D

Second picture if a close up of the knot.
Wanderlust - I'm wondering if your main bury isn't long enough. In SGT Rock's videos, he speaks of using a minimum 12 inch bury (if i recall). When I have made whoopies in the past, the shorter buries have worked with my weight but with some friends who are heavier, they have experienced some slippage so I have started to make all my buries 10-12".

That may be. I was messing around with it last night. Just for shins and giggles, I tried a set out of Amsteel and they worked beautifully. Tonight, I may try to do a set out of dynaglide with a 12" bury. After weighing the amsteel ones though, they're only .1 oz more per UCR than my dynaglide whoopies. I'm not an uber gram weenie so that quarts ounce won't make me cry.
