Tutorial: How To Make an UCR

It's not necessarily the weight, but the reduction in bulk that some find attractive. Especially for those in areas with huge trees and need a lot of cord.

Just curious about the weight compared to a set of similar length whoopies....Has anyone weighted say a 6' UCR versus a 6' whoopie?

My 6' whoopsies with Dutch hooks weigh in at 1.7 oz per pair. The slightly less than 6' UCRs with dutch hooks came is at 1.08 oz IIRC.

I just made a set of UCRs. They are quite a bit more finicky than I thought. I made 7' long UCRs and they still weigh about 5g/.15oz less than my 5.75' long whoopie slings. I'm not sure if I like them, but I'll be testing them and find out. I kept my old dynaglyde whoopies just in case I want to go back.

I flip flopped from woopies to ucr then back to woopies and now I'm back to the ucr. I like that it will go farther when needed, with less material. Nothing against woopie, I love woopie, but now that I've tried both fairly thoroughly I think ill stick with the UCR. Plus my wife graduated from there.

Hey Fire, if you don't mind the. Question, was it it about them that's making them so finicky?

The addition of the knot at the end, was the hardest part for me. I have clumsy fingers, so liked the ease of constructing the whoopie over the UCR.

I also adapted this construction for use in my structural ridgeline. I like how the design keeps the excess rope from being over you to at the ends of the hammock.

Since they are not loaded with weight on both sides, milking them and ensuring no slip is a bit more finicky than a whoopie sling is. Time will tell if they stay in my pack.

One way to shorten the minimum hang distance of the UCR:

Take the fixed eye on the hammock end and larks head it to your hammock end. Wrap the cord multiple times around the hammock before making the larks head. This way, your fixed eye bury is wrapped around the hammock.

I believe I saw that in Sgt. Rocks most recent video.

I use the full volume angle cut while feeding the rope through itself to make the locked brummel and cut the taper when I'm ready to pull the bury.

Sampson Eye Splice instructions with taper.

"Is it really necessary?" Lots of hangers are getting by without it, but I'll continue to taper for maximum strength.

Thanks, hadn't seen that before. Cutting the taper AFTER pulling the bury through makes A LOT more sense than the instructions I've seen.
